I would really like to join this hike, but am a little apprehensive as to what it takes so i do not hold the group back with my pace. I hiked Mt.Whitney for the first time on Aug 1st and am hooked now.(backpacked on the maintrail).
Anyone from LA heading up and doesnt mind giving me a ride?
thanks

Is there any part of the Whitney hike that bothered you. How was your pace for Whintey. If you had no trouble on the Whitney hike, then I assume you will do fine with at least one of the Thor hike options.

I will add names list with confirmation now that date is set

Also - need to know who is going to be in town Friday.
Need to be able to pick up permits for our groups.
Richard has already stated he will be up Friday and can pick up permits for at least partial of the group.

Attention !!!!!
Need volunteer(s) to lead group.

Group sizes are limited by regulations to no more than 15 - so we definately need someone to lead up a route. This can be a alternate route or just an alternate start time.

The plan is for all groups to meet on the summit at 1pm.
Group leaders should be familiar with the route they lead as well as approximate allowable hike times.

I will be starting a group via the Smiley Face route at 7am. This will be a relaxed pace group. Allowing 6 hours to reach the summit should make for a comfortable pace. I will be hiking with my Rhino Garmin as well - so anyone bringing radios will be able to stay in contact(monitoring channel 7.0)

1 month to go - anticipating a fun day !!!

Count me in. I don't mind taking a group up the SE Couloir (then down to LBSL/NF).

Could see some interesting weather; I'll head up regardless, so plan accordingly.

Jeff -

Thanks for the feedback - I was hoping to hear back from you.
2 years ago had a little bit of snow - October can bring quite the variety.

It will be hard to chose up groups ahead of time before we all meet. The leaders may already have an idea of some of those who will be in their groups.

I think the best thing to do is all meet at the Hostel Saturday morning and set the plan in motion. Leaders will describe routes, expected hike times and related. Remember the idea is to reach summit around 1pm.

The Stemwinder people obviously are exempt from this as they will already have their group chosen pre-hike and known start time, etc.

Plans are shaping up as time gets closer.

Thanks - Tom

Tom,
No problem. The '07 hike was a lot of fun (schedules clashed for '08, unfortunately).

Yeah, October is always a crap-shoot for weather. (It really dumped on me in '05; summer weather other years; rain on others.) I just wanted to underscore the "preparedness" aspect for those that might be lulled into a false sense of security by the t-shirt weather of the last two group hikes. But, we'll sort out the particulars Saturday morning. Looking forward to it.

Cheers,
Jeff

Jeff M also stated that he'd be interested in leading a group.

I'm interested in doing the Stemwinder route, any updates on who might lead the group and possible start time ?
What type of prerequisites / experiences needed for this route ?

I would suggest sending a pm to Dave G. or Graham.

I do know we have a volunteer to lead one of the class III routes from Girl Scout Lake also.

Hey Tomcat-

Please sign me up for the Thor hike.

Thanks,

James

also, I am expecting to arrive friday morning around 9, so if you need a leader (on paper), I can pick up permits for a group of 15, though I am not familiar with any of the routes and probably shouldn't actually lead anything...

Temperatures dropped significantly this week.
No longer just shorts and t-shirts weather. I think I even saw a slight chance of snow for Sunday pm on Whitney.

2 weeks to go - looking forward to this event.

Hi All.

I finally got that weekend scheduled off work, so I am IN for the group hike.

I'll be driving up from the Disneyland area, and may have room for another rider. PM me if you may want to carpool.

I'll add my food contribution to the other thread about culinary offerings.
