Oh I wish you could have come too Anita. Always room for more friends.

Oh btw - one more added hike thought.

I am just going to throw this idea out there and see if I get laughed at, or if the group thinks this is a good idea.

I think, like many of the people signed up for the Thor Peak climb and dinner buffet, that I will only know a couple of the people at dinner by sight. What do you think about this. If I brought some of the small self adhesive stick-on-your-shirt name tags and a Sharpie Marker to write your name and your board/trail name on, would any one do it? I think it would be nice to be able to put names with the faces over dinner. What do you guys think?

I vote for name tags!!! Its hard to learn everyone's face in 48 hours from a little picture on the web...

Name's are hard enough as it is...

hopefully we can get to a point on saturday where we don't need them anymore... like before a group summit photo-shoot...

I have spent the last half hour reading this.
It is tough sometimes to visit old memories, but I wanted to review this before heading up the mountain this weekend. The words made me sad but the pictures made me smile.

I hope you don't mind:

I talked to Bob Rockwell a few months ago about having someone "good with words" along to say a few things while we're at the top celebrating Kent's life, but he informed me a couple of weeks ago that he wouldn't be able to make the climb.

I heard thru the grapevine that Kurt Wedberg was interested in doing the Stemwinder (still a big question mark with the snow that fell) and sent him a message asking if he wouldn't mind taking on the role, and he agreed.

Between Doug Sr. (no option for not making the summit Doug) and Kurt, I think our memorial to Kent will be an emotional event.

See you at the top...

Thanks for posting the link to the original thread, Tom.

It was hard reading those posts again.... so sad. It seems like it was only yesterday, and the sadness is still very fresh. This has been a difficult year, but what we can take from it is how important each and every day is. We have no idea if we or our loved ones will be here tomorrow, so live each day as if it’s our last.

I’m heading south after work today… hoping to get in to make it to the California boarder before I get too tired. I should be in Lone Pine Friday afternoon.

I will echo the thanks to Tom for all the work he's done aranging this trip, and to Doug for taking on the Saturday night Potluck.

Thanks Richard for making the arrangements for the summit memorial… I am so glad that I’m able to be there and a part of it.

Rosie

I can always find a positive in every situation but could not find one regarding not being able to make the group hike. Just found one... don't have to wear a name tag.

On a serious note, I just re-read the "memorial post" for Kent (thanks Tom) and have tears in my eyes. I really want to there with all of you. I have never felt such an integral part of a group like I do with the WPSMB members. It really is like a family. I will be with you in spirit as you honor Kent. What an outstanding man. His spirit lives on in his family, friends and the mountains.

MC

Echoing others, thanks to Tom and all who have contributed to make this group hike happen. A lot of time went into this. You guys are the best.

You will all definitely be in my thoughts on Saturday as I'm participating in a church-sponsored festival here in Ohio that day. Throughout the day, I will be praying for everyone's safety, that everyone will have a great bonding experience, that new friendships will be made (or rekindled where needed -- you know who you are), and that you will all have a wonderful day enjoying each others' company in the beautiful mountains we all love. M.C. is so right on about this being a unique family. Looking forward to the stories and pictures. MUST ... MOVE ... TO ... BISHOP!!! wink

Has anyone considered climbing the blue ice above Clyde Meadows on the way up ?
Here is a link to a recent photo .
A recent picture of the Blue Ice above Clyde Meadows
Perhaps if Stemwinder has too much snow cover , then the ice might provide an entertaining alternative .

I absolutely hate to do this, but I gotta bag out of this one. Im exhausted and still prepping for a big presentation tomorrow and am overseeing a project which is overdue and I need to spend some time on it tomorrow night and this weekend. Thank you Tom, and the other organizers, for all the work you have put into this weekend. Am sorry I, once again, wont be able to make it.

Temperatures dropped significantly this week.
No longer just shorts and t-shirts weather.

10-3-09 hiked to Thor with Lisa and Snow Nymph
Ice early morning on the slabs at Clyde Meadow and long sleeves thoughout the day

So here is the way it is shaping up

Group A -leader Tom Brown aka Tomcat_rc will also have several friends that will help and are familiar for this group.
I will lead a group up starting up the North Fork. We will be taking the Smiley Face Route and plan to start around 7am hiking from the Portal. I did this hike Saturday at a simluted group pace and we summited in 6:05 minutes. This included several stops for break and a nice easy pace. Anyone who wants to make this hike but is not sure if they are in condition or other worries should be encouraged to join this group. If you decide to turn around during part of the hike(LBSL or Clyde), we will make sure you are provided for a safe passage down.

Group B - Sierra Gator had to cancel - maybe Ridgeline Dave can lead the second group starting out.
This will be a faster paced group. We talked about leaving 1/2 hour to 1 hour later than the group A. The start time will be finalized by leader

Group C - Jeff M leader

Leading a group starting up the Main Trail and ascending via the SE culoir. Jeff will announce his start time. This is a loose chute and group size should be limited. Jeff can add to this section.

Group D - Stemwinder.

This is a techinal route. Graham, Dave and Bob H. are capable of leading. They will handle all of their group contacts for start times and other logistics. By now I belive they have already picked their groups - but any questions should be directed to them directly.

Last posting I belive Norma, GigaMike and Richard P were the rest of that team.

Group E - leader Laura aka Moosetracks

leading a class III route from Girl Scout Lake(aka Barney Lake)
This route is the same aproach for Smiley except from GS Lake will use the class III boulder for a more direct approach to the summit. People taking this route should have comfort in class III boulders. If you have to ask what this means - this is not the route for you. Any questions contact group leader. Laura will set start time.

Group F - Doug Snr. - route TBD
Ok - even though he is much more interesting and has a lifetime of stories to tell, not everyone gets to hike with Doug. Remember no punching, kicking or scratching. We are all adults.

Remember the idea is to get everyone to the summit as close to 1pm as possible. My guess is that everyone should be able to descend within 3 hours.

Several of us will have radios and monitor on station 6 sub 3
Last weekend I was able to communicate with friends at Clyde Meadow while I was near Lone Pine Lake.

Feel free to add to message or pm as needed.

Additional information:
I would like to meet at the Hostel at 6am.
That will give us time to meet and divide into groups.
It will take about 30 minutes to commute up to the Portal and get ready to start the hike

Jeff -

I am glad I am not the only one who felt this way. It sure put things into perspective this morning. Not sure I have the words sometimes that seem appropriate.

Tom thanks for the perfect words that put it all in perspective, why we are going on this hike.

Should be in Lone Pine bet 2-4pm. How many permits should I try to get? And if no one in group B has done the Smiley Face route we may be hitching a ride on another route since SG is not coming.
