Hello:

I was above trail crest Wednesday Night and camped on the west side just below JM trail. I new he was missing and after a very difficult and enduring night of extreme cold and wind, I pushed on towards the summit early Thursday with high expectations of finding Wade. I wish i could have done more under these conditions but my heart goes out to the Family.

To Wade's family and friends-

Sincere condolences for your loss. This was not the outcome we were all hoping for.

To the family of Wade Brunette:

I am so very sorry for your loss. Although probably none of us on the Whitney board knew Wade, we felt involved the moment we heard of his absence, watching the thread (almost by the hour) hoping for good news. Please know that you will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.

You have been in our thoughts and prayers since the very moment Doug notified the board Wade was missing. I haven't gone more than 10 minutes in the day without thinking about Wade. Every moment that I looked at the sky, saw the blue and knew the weather was better, I prayed Wade would be with you soon. From your post, your family looks to be a wonderful loving family.
I am also very proud that the people on this board went out of their way to help, to pray, to care. You have also brought hope to my heart.
Every time in the future, when I walk the Mount Whitney trail, I will look up and think of Wade.
With love to the Brunette Family......Joseph Quillan

You guys are in my thoughts and prayers. When I got the call over the radio it made the last 6 miles of my hike exceedingly rough.

Everyone on this board is serious when they offer support. You need anything, you ask. We love our mountains, those who climb them, and those who are lost in them. They are family, their family is family.

Sincere condolences from all of us in the Whitney community. Wade seems to have been one special guy, and passed on doing a thing he loved. Most don't. He'll always be a special part of this mountain we're all drawn to.

I recall a quote from John Muir on his thoughts while in danger on a mountain, to the effect that he knew he might fall to his death, but how bad could that be?

I've had the same sentiment come to me where I thought if I died right then it would be OK. For Mr. Brunette's survivors I am sorry for their loss. I hope for him it was going out doing what he loved to do..

I have been deeply moved by the dedicated SARs Teams and the warmth of the Mt Whitney Family. The outpouring you have shown for my brother and my whole family in our time of need has been more than I ever expected. I want to thank you all for being the eyes and legs for the family and finding my brother. Through your love and caring for a lost fellow climber you have given the family a very special gift and memory. Wade loved the out of doors, long walks and yes mountain climbing among many other things. He died doing what he loved doing – a Happy Death.
Thank-you for being you and caring.

From the poem "The Mountain's Call" by Peter (Walter A) Starr Jr. written shortly before Pete's disappearance in the Minarets in 1933. I've selected these four lines for my headstone when my time comes.

Lure of Sierra, wild and free

Jewels deep set in shining skies

Defiant mountains beckon me

To glory and dream in their paradise.

RIP Wade
