I may make it - am struggling with a bad cold, so will make the call early Saturday morning.
Doug - am a bit confused why you're headed over from Bishop. From the south, it seems like taking CA168 out of Big Pine over Westgard Pass to Dyer is a more direct route. Is that faster than taking US6 out of Bishop? I know it's a bit slow going over the pass, but overall it looks like about 40 miles further. Thanks.

Hi Kevin I tried last year to find the best way , 168 works , I have a meeting in Bishop today and thought everyone knows Bishop so that was the fine line , I went up to Bristlecone last week Hint how long it's been? the road off 168 is paved now ! Thanks for the road check I should add the high pointers always ask how to get to the trailhead and I most times give them both routes ,the mine roads still trick many of them they see the roads from 264 and turn before Trail Canyon Doug

Thanks, Doug. I'm a relative newcomer to the eastern Sierra, so wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something. Have been up that way (CA168) and done Chocolate Mtn a couple of times in winter, but have never gone beyond that TH so will probably go that way and approach Dyer from the south.

Bob, I was bummed that I didn't get to meet you either... I've seen your "resume" on SummitPost and really was looking forward to getting to talk to you about climbing.
The real reason, and probably the scariest thing I've encountered in a long while: My headlights went out on the way down from the Portal on Friday evening. Blind in an instant, I slammed on the brakes and waited for my eyes to adjust to total darkness and then pulled over to the side of the road and waited for sunrise.
Apologies to those who sat around waiting for me to show up. I don't usually flake out, although Mike is now calling me that.

Richard, you carry enough extra with you to make it through a night on the mountain, but you DON'T have extra fuses, etc. in your car?..........hehehHHHhhhh..............

Truth be told, I don't even know where the fuses are. I don't really care how they work, I just drive 'em. I'm going to let a mechanic figure this one out for me.

Bob, it was nice meeting you and Vic and Chan! Congratulations on summiting, Doug, Mike, Ava and I started about 20 minutes after Bob and his gang. We went up the ridge to the north of the bowl in order to seek shelter from the wind (boy, was it COLD!). We turned around after meeting up with Bob on his way down. Had the most fun rolling and sliding in the snow! Thank you so much, Doug, for all the mentoring; Mike, for taking care of us; and Ava, for your warm truck and water! TR and photosI was supposed to start my ski season at Mammoth today, but decided I couldn't handle another day in the cold, so I went up to Lone Pine Lake instead. The icicles were so pretty! photosRichard: we were worried aout you! Wondering maybe if you had a run-in with our hunter neighbor, we kept hearing shots and didn't know what he was shooting at,

Nice photos everyone!
This may be one time that I'm not too disappointed about missing a climb. It sure looked nasty.

Unfortunately, that is correct. I am leaving for Mexico City on Saturday for some high-altitude climbing with Lori Williams, souloscrambler and a couple of their friends. I need Friday for some final prep work.
I'll try and catch the Baldy climb in Jan or Feb when Kurt comes back for the Whitney shows.

Wow, small world. Lori is on the www.sgwa.org site as well. I ran into her on Saturday on Vivian creek. Have fun and be safe. Tell Lori I said Hi, although I only met her the once. I also ran into John from our Thor Hike that day. He was the one wearing the San Diego Padre hat. Take care. JS

I will still get out on Sunday - got to keep the streak alive. In December it will 3 years every week hiking. INSPIRATIONAL is an understatement... I am leaving for Mexico City on Saturday for some high-altitude climbing with Lori Williams, souloscrambler and a couple of their friends. You got on the climb! I had seen that thread and thought... wonder if Richard will take Lori up on her invite? Awesome. Good luck to all of you! Also on my 'to do' list...

Best news I've read about Orizaba is that they now have a couple new pit toilets in place... I could go on, but it would get rather disgusting...
Thanks M.C. I'm looking forward to this.

I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that we are looking forward to seeing trip reports and pictures (documenting the new toilets not necessary) of your Mexican adventure. Safe travels and climbing to the entire party.
