Hey Richard, this sounds like fun; I'm gonna try and make it.
Any estimates on how long the hike will take?

It's sounds interesting and fun but I have a few questions before committing. I'm sure others will have the same questions. Some of these may be premature but I had to ask.

1. Where will the hike begin?

The trail can be broken into sections. Portal to Lone Pine Camp Ground (NRT). Lone Pine Camp Ground to the Arch Trail (Movie Road) . Arch Trail Parking area to Town. Each section has rewards and vistas to photograph. Thanks Doug.

2. If it begins at the Portal how will everyone get there since this is the middle of the winter?

3. Regardless of where it begins should I plan to bring winter gear such as snow shoes and etc?

Hi The hike will start at Lone Pine Campground and end in town so we will car pool up and later several will go back up to get the shuttle cars, The days are warm 40-50 so light clothing and we will watch the weather as wind would be the worst condition.

We could do a short hike up the Portal Road then crosscountry up the slope to show what can be expected for snow shoe use, we have tested snowshoes on this shortcut before it gets people aware about snow travel/ speed and slope constraints . Thanks Doug

Doug,

This is getting really interesting! I haven't been on snowshoes since somewhere around 1964 but I'm been getting the itch to try again. And I would like a full day on the trail if I'm going to drive up there.

If I want to do this part of the trip can I rent snowshoes in LP that morning or should I rent them down here and bring them with me?

I'm interested.

There's a local SC hike the weekend before which may complement this hike.

I am definitely in if I can work out some scheduling issues.
My wife Marta also wants to go. I'll confirm as soon as possible. Happy New Year to everyone!

Hi Dave Kirk and Coral will join the group and several locals may join in.

I did several side trips off the trail and a peak near the trail and about mid point of the hike can be added , this adds one short uphill section but on top you get a 360 view of the area and would be a first for many to climb ,it is very easy hiking no climbing.(option)

Start time is still open ?

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

I am going to cook 1 or 2 whole chicken in the crock pot while we're hiking, maybe add some taters - and may also bring a salad.

Really looking forward to this! I still have room if anyone wants to carpool.

I will do a Greek salad: feta cheese, kalamata olives, all that good stuff unless there is a huge majority UGH from the crowd.

Blooty, re: car pooling, are you driving up and back on Saturday or staying over Saturday night? I'm thinking about staying at the hostel Sat. night. If the timing works, would it be hard for you to pick me up in downtown LA? I'm easy off the 110 at 4th street and back on to the 5 going north.
