I'd bet I'm not the only one who doesn't like the load time for the "Wildflowers are starting to bloom" thread, so I'm starting a new one for this season...

The rest of the photos from this session on El Pee Pee. Looking forward to having loads of fun over the next few months...

BTW, if you post to this thread, please size your photos down so we don't have the formatting issues we had with the other thread.

Thanks Richard

I am following the Death Valley bloom developments at
Wildflower Report

We came out from Virginia in 2005 "just" to see the "bloom of a lifetime"

Wonder what this year will bring, what with the recent rains. Please keep us posted. thanks, Harvey

I rode home thru the valley. There is a lot of green starting to show. I hope it turns in to something special in a couple of months.

It's still early. Was at Darwin Falls last week climbing up to the 2nd and 3rd falls - a few minor blooms down low, but nothing much yet. The rock nettles were out, though. Zowey. Velco could take gripper lessons from that stuff.

Did see some Blue Dick on Red Mountain (the Red Mountain near the town of the same name) a couple of weeks ago - near the summit of all places. No blooms, just the characteristic 2 long pedals. The cottonwoods are starting to leaf out in the past week.

We've been having a warm spell until a couple of days ago. The temp has dropped, and a north wind is fierce yesteday and today. Last night the wind was gusting regularly to 45mph+ in the IWV and Searles valleys. There is a faint tinge of green covering the valley floors, so this bodes well for wildflowers. But, it's anybody's guess what will bloom and when.

Headed up towards the Owens Peak Wilderness:

Short Canyon is starting to bloom, but it's still hunting season. It'll probably be in fine shape in a few more weeks. I did see one Poppy.

I'm really starting to like some of the abstract stuff that comes about because of my lack of technique (causing out of focus blurs).

There's more here and here.

Indian Wells Canyon, Short Canyon and the slopes up around Five Fingers.

The flowers in Indian Wells Canyon were pretty beat up (by the wind and cold, I guess). Short Canyon is probably at, or very near, it's peak.

Blue Dick.

Desert Dandelion.

California Poppy.

spectacular 127 pictures, Richard, thanks,

we came through Death Valley last week a little early for the peak of the bloom. Only other spring comparison I had for DV was the big one in 2005.

I agree, but:

It's not a competition.

I haven't seen any blooming cactus yet.

Oh, and the flower I labeled a desert dadilion is desert daisy (I think).

Here are a few more from up by Five Fingers:

Incredible red (not photoshop) Desert Paintbrush. The white Forget Me Nots (?) are hard to get good photos of, but at least this one seems to be in focus.

I keep telling myself to carry the big camera and macro out, but I haven't felt motivated to do it.
