I'd like to join you. Seems like with Peasants, Mouses, and Cats, you ought to have the Public along.
However I've never hiked or climbed with any in this group- though I have eaten Doug's burgers and met Shin on the trail.
Living at Sea Level I would most likely head up a day early Thursday to sleep at altitude- probably either the Portal, Lower Boy Scout, or somewhere in between.
Summit isn't my main goal as much as enjoying a side of Whitney that I haven't been, and meeting lots of great people. My fitness that day along with how many times I manage to get out on Baldy will determine whether I go above Iceberg Lake.
Being married with kids I'll have to thread a tightrope between our various schedules- but hopefully it will work out.

I'm going to gracefully bow out of this trip. I've got a race calling my name. Y'all have fun and be careful.

Looks like the list is growing and most are overnighters. The overnighters might want to form groups possibly with their own leaders and permits.
Suggestions for a group this size? Especially in winter conditions?

Hi all, I just wanted you all to know that I am planning on making the Notch my summit. I will not be going any higher then that. The skill level needed for the upper part is not with me at this time. I will not put any of the group at risk because I do not have the skills. This is just my own personal call. Hopefully next year I will have the skills needed to make the real summit but for this trip my summit will be the Notch.
I just wanted to put that out there so if anyone would like to make this there summit as well. This might help with grouping people together.
Thanks and can’t wait to freeze the tail off..lol
Get up! Get moving! That is when life begins.

Hi Mouse I read your post about an hour ago , and I thought for about an hour, I need another hour to reflect , but now I would say your report of how you see mountaineering is the purest most open account I have every heard or read. Honest, direct and with direction. Thank You Doug

Yes, well said. The Notch, or anywhere in the North Fork, is an excellent "summit". I could stop there or just about anywhere in that whole drainage and would have a fantastic time. There just might be a big Notch and/or Iceberg Lake "summit" party, anyone bringing ice skates?

Thanks Richard,
I have a few questions. What kind of gear will you use to fix the rope? Rock, Ice, snow pickets? Combination? What is the best method for ascending the aforementioned rope? What conditions do you expect? Hard snow, soft snow, ice? What are the contingencies? Inquiring minds want to know!

I recall a trip last year about the first part of April, after a heavy storm. I searched and found the photo link to that trip. Gigamike photos from 2009 Mt Whitney-MR-Mt loop 4.11.2009 .
Of interest would be the photos starting about 55- 70 . Mike has some very detailed shots of the last 400' In your best day you never get as easy of a ramp onto the slabs at the start of the last 400' only to be tricked on the amount of snow at the last 100'as you can see from the shots .
Check out the Photo link topic. Many of the posts will have shots of the Mountaineer's Route. Thanks Doug

Thanks for keeping the list updated JamesL. Looks perfect... I agree with the idea to form groups. 1. The day climbers 2. The Notch summit climbers 3. The slow climbers (overnighters) 4. The faster climbers (overnighters) (The Notch summit climbers could be combined into one of the other three groups depending on their plans). Three groups would be ideal... Also, both overnighter groups could camp at the same location. I will be in the slow climbers (overnighters) group. Does this sound good to the 'crew'??? Other ideas/thoughts? MC

I could jump in with the slower with ambitions to summit but won't die trying. I would also very much like to join the hike and specifically this group. I came to the board looking for information on doing the MR in April and was pleasantly surprised to see this group coalescing coincidentally. I'm happy to haul more than my fair share of gear and food for the privilege of attending!
