Yo Dan;

It'll be great to hike with you again! Hey, if you're going to run ahead - you wanna carry the Bear can...

Oh yeah - bear cans - do we roll with 'em or with out 'em?
or do we simply hang the food from richard's umbrella?

I may join in if the weather is good. I did Whitney, Muir, and Russell last April as a two-night trip in perfect weather, so I'm a bit spoiled. If I come, I'll probably do the overnight thing and try to keep up with the faster group that's heading for the summit. Maybe I'll finally get to meet Richard.

Lots of people taking turns breaking trail could be a real plus. I just hope we don't have a Hillary Step type traffic jam in the final 400.

Personally I think it is too early to make any kind of decision. I will be leaving the portal(or wherever I am able to drive to) in the wee hours and try to time it so I make Iceberg as the overnighters are preparing to start their hike.

If the snow is as it was when I went up with Richard, Mike, Moose and Sierra Gator last year, then we will all be taking turns post holing and breaking trail. But remember the week before this storm, Richard had an easy day hike in what could be described as perfect late spring conditions.

So my hike will be what I determine it to be as conditions warrant. If the snow is firm, I will help break trail for our summit party. If it is knee high unconsolidated mess, I will have to see how far I feel like tolerating misery. I know I will be hiking with friends, and that always makes the suffering seem more tolerable. I am not the fastest(by a long ways) and I am not the slowest, but I will do my part in breaking trail and telling a few trail stories.

Word of warning !!! A couple of times it seems someone has been hiding a rock magnet in my pack. When we went up with Chris 2 years ago, I looked like a russian dancer at one point trying to avoid the falling shrapnel. Helmets are definately recommended.

Well Said Tom. We're all excited but who knows what conditions will be like come late April. I remember in 1990 when I was going to HS in Danville. We had what was called a Miracle March. Check the mammoth mountain website for snowfall in March 1990-1991 season. Whatever conditions are like James put me and Adam S down with HypoxicCrazyZombieDude!! Mark you better protect those cookies bro.
Carole you don't need a bear canister on Whitney, but you might want to bring your Yeti Canister.......urgh!

Yes well put and great pics. Lots of work getting through there. The groupings are merely tentative, just to organize a large group if only for now. Things will evolve as conditions warrant. List is updated. Please send me a PM for any list changes.

I'll have decision points at Iceberg Lake and the Notch, to review both how I'm feeling physically and my comfort level with the route/conditions/etc.

But basically I'll go in the summit group- probably the slow-ish one. I usually climb about 1000' per hour with good conditions when I'm acclimated. Slower at 14,000' when I was at sea level two days before.

In my book, snow climb is homologous with tentative... I would say that all is dependent on conditions (snow/weather and climbers). I had originally written: 'Of course, groups are subject to change' on my post about breaking into groups. I assumed that was understood. I've been staying quiet on the fact that we have a large group for the MR in April (though some may back out). I think breaking into smaller groups serves several purposes, safety #1. Btw, like your idea to play Russel Brice, Richard...

I'm hoping my good luck with weather holds up for this one... smile Really excited to see you, Tomcat, Richard, Team Hypoxia and crew! Also, meet those of you whom I have admired from afar... And looking so forward to seeing you, Doug (plan to acclimatize a day or two and will be staying at the hostel).

p.s. Looks like my name has been taken off the list. Been 86'd from my own climb... whistle

How did I end up in a group that doesn't include the person I set this climb up for? shocked

On anther note: I may just climb up and down the mountain both days. By the time this climb happens, it will have been at least a year since I've slept on the ground and I still haven't been able to get myself motivated, even though winter camping was my New Year's Resolution. smile

Depends on conditions at the time as to what pace and what group I may end up in. I will time my departure to reach the overnight group at about the time they are starting their summit bid.

*note to self: get in some high altitude work before mid April

I'll let mouse push you around this time.
don't wanna bruise the skinny little mountain dude.

P.S. I don't know if Brandon will be in the notch group. He's got climbing experience. I'm a boob, I mean noob.

Just an FYI we may be stopping at the Notch but don't want to be in a group all by are lonesome. I can't hit Carole.. I need someone I can hit..Ha-ha..I will have to wait for Mike to come back down..

I think we will be in the mid to slow group and then stop at the Notch.

Is that OK?????

Not to worry Mouse. I'll hang with you. I don't care which group I'm in.
