Sent in my application on Feb 1st and just received notification by mail yesterday for my hike date. I feel that was really quick and a smooth process.

Just got my "official" notice in the mail yesterday! Woohoo!

I had submitted 2 pages of date options, and ended up with one of my last choices, but as it turns out, the reserved permit day is going to work really well with everyone's schedule. (more "magic" Doug smile )

I got my two favorite Whitney Portal campsites reserved, and we're ready to go.

Day hike for August 31st!

My credit card was charged yesterday, no letter in the mail yet. Can't wait to see which day I got. This will be my second visit and I am so excited!

I have a main trail permit for late June that I will not be using. What's the proper etiquette here? Can I cancel with the Inyo NFS and get a refund? Is there a secondary market? Do I just eat the $15 and forget about it?

Hi Swan,

Unfortunately, there are no refunds - the $15.00 is not actually for the "permit" but the processing fee. There was no permit issued, so there's nothing to sell in the secondary market.

Yah... unfortunately you'll have to eat the $15.00. The proper thing to do is to call the reservation office (760-873-2483) after April 15th to cancel the reservation.

A lot of people don't cancel...maybe figuring "why bother - I'm not going to get my money back anyway", but there are limited numbers of permits available, and if someone had the date you were hoping for, you'd REALLY appreciate if they called to cancel... making it available for you or others.

There's no incentive... other than doing what you know is right and would like others to do as well.
