Look what I found...

While I was looking for this...

Not an escalator, but it looks a whole lot like a staircase to me.

BTW, if you don't know what you're looking at in photo one, that's M.C. on the right.

I love that staircase route - hope enough snow is gone to use it.

Cool Picture Richard. That was my first hike with everybody on Baldy. I had met Mike once before on South Fork SG, but first time meeting everyone else. Now it feels like we're all family.

One of my 'mountain boyfriends'... wink

Thanks for posting this pic, Richard. My first intro to the 'crew' (aside from meeting you and Moosie on Whitney in June '07). That Baldy hike was one of my best hikes to date. The friendships that spawned from that day I will treasure my entire life. The best!

MC smile

An amazing day (1st time we met)...

I was hoping that pic of you and me had been lost in some kind of 'net photo archives'... wink I had just had my hair butchered before that hike (a trendy shag that went terribly wrong). With the outdoor elements, I looked like a poodle by the time I was on the summit. eek smile

I"m still planning on it just up to camp for some fun. Am not planning on the final 400 due to skill level so hopefully one less person in the chute should help. All of this depends of the avalanche report at the time. Moderate to considerable will be a trip no go for me.
Thanks

Nice pics Mark - hope it's that sunny when we do Whitney - sounds like there may be a lot of snow - guess we'll have to wait til the last minute regarding snowshoes.

Doug: are you selling the micro spikes at the hostel, if so I will pick up a pair Thursday...

I figure if you can summit Baldy up the west bowl in them I should be able to to the final 400 in them.. smile

In my book steel 12 point crampons is the only way to go . Given the length of travel on snow and rock and the likelyhood of frozen snow for hundreds of feet , anyone wearing aluminum or " hiking " crampons would be a liability to both themselves and their group .
A proper set of mountaineering crampons would also give the wearer more confidence when the snow is firmer . When heading down it is easier to place your heel deep into the footsteps and get a more secure purchase .
Just my opinion gathered over many years .

Simon, Mark was referring back to the experiment of Doug, Sr. testing out microspikes on Baldy in conditions that probably only Doug would be able to pull off....it was a joke.

Thanks Bee , I spoke out of context perhaps ! My statement still stands generally , but I withdraw the reference to Marks' post !
My imagination was running wild !

This guy? You've got to be v. good or v crazy or both. cool Best thing was, you were not alone - I counted at least 5 or 6 other skiers and 2 boarders. We commented that we could have sat and watched people go up and down the bowl all day. Someone said they could do the same thing from Iceberg Lake this weekend. In any event, nobody wants to see anyone get hurt, and in the end, we hope everyone who enjoys these sports does so knowing their limitations. IMHO, most do. One can get hurt crossing the street.
