If I want to ascend Whitney from the Portal and then exit
via some other trail head (not the Portal), all on the
same day, do I need some other permit than the Mt Whitney
Day Use permit? Thanks! PB

Hi This seems like a very simple question but I bet it has at least a thousand questions to answer , Overnight? do you plan on carring a sleeping bag, stove, tent, the list can get longer. The simple answer contact the FS and NPS and see what rules apply at what exit point. Don't rely on I think answers from a third party and life will be well. Thanks Doug

I'm convincing myself by careful reading of the FS & NPS
web sites that I only need a Mt Whitney Day Use permit.
I will not be camping, will not be carrying any camping
gear. Just up Whitney and zip out some other way.
It appears that this is legal as long as you exit on the
same calendar day that you started. I.e., you do not
need a day use permit to travel outside of the Whitney
Zone. Thanks - P

I wonder what way one could zip out other than the way in from the portal.

There are, of course, many options if you don't mind the
miles. Cottonwood Lakes TH or over Shepherd Pass would be
the shortest. An issue is the car shuttle, of course. PB
