Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Mike told me he was going to kick my *** if I didn't spend three days up there after getting him into this mess. (Putting words into his mouth.)

I went up the North Fork from the avalache across the road, which is actually now a blockade the the Road Crew's put in place to keep us Yahoo's out of their way while they finish cleaning up the road. There is a path wide enough for an MC to get by (that's motorcycle, not our M.C.)

Here's a link to the photos.

Take note of the fact that I was able to scramble up the north-side Wall Route, staying well clear of the blue ice on the south-side slopes. (Mike doesn't like my devious plan for suggesting this as our route of ascent. I think it's one more way to find out whether anybody will be questionable on the steeper, exposed, terrain above. He thinks I've gone nuts.)

BTW, Dave dropped some self-issue permits at the Hostile (He's still BLM for a few more weeks and then will be back at his FS job.) and said we should set a good example by filling them out and placing them in the Drop Box at the Visitor's Center.

We have used this route in the past to judge how people will react to the exposure above as the elephant ear is a good test.

I'm still tentatively going. I'll make the final decision next week after we have a better idea what the conditions will be. I'm going for the summit, not the party, and I'm getting a little old for endless postholeing or getting blown off the summit. I'll post again when I make up my mind. If I go, I'll be completely independent; I won't be using anybody else's tent, ropes, etc. I'm looking forward to this.

I'm still planning on being there.
I am thinking of spending Thurs night at the Portal (parking as far up the road as I can get). Then I can wait for the crowd to arrive on Fri am. I need all the acclim. help I can get coming from about 12" above sea level!
I am trying to get hold of some lightweight Video gear. Docu/drama?

Do you think we need snowshoes?

Nick.

Snowshoes? Depending on how much new snow is up there. I'm bringing mine and they may just stay in the car.

Do we need Bear Canisters’? I wouldn't think so but just want to make sure.

Wag Bags? I know everyone loves to hear about wag bags. Is someone picking them up or do we all need to stop and get or own?

Just a few question I had on my mind. I know small mind.

Bear Canisters NO! You might want to bring a Yeti canister, if Yeti goes....OOPS.....

Snowshoes bring them in the car so at least you can make up your mind at the TH...WagBags whoever decides to get the permits will be issued the wagbags....Don't forget to bring an umbrella and Jeans...

We don't need bear canisters? I thought they were required when camping in the Sierras, or is that only during certain months? I just bought one for this trip.

As for tent/ropes, does that include harnesses? I'd be curious what the cost ends up being, but think I'd prefer to use my tent (I might stay an extra night), and go without ropes.

i think i once counted thirty-something people up there. this trip up there will probably beat that!

may just end up with quotas in winter...

i'm eating late, so i only have one hand available for typing. thus, no caps.

btw, james, thanks for taking on putting the list of participants together.

btw2, i'm hearing additional names, but cant confirm them yet.

Carole has a 5D and I have a 7D, both of which can so professional quality video. I was thinking this might be a good time to RTFM, so I know how to do it.

I found another shopping bag full of WAG Bags in the garage. I'll bring those along and we can ask Doug if he still has a box of them around.

I am confirming that I am in - looking forward to meeting you m.c. another time - thanks for being the reason that Richard is making this happen, and thanks to everyone else -

I should mention that I've never even been camping before ... are we going to have to walk to the top?

Just double checking, since I'm a little confused by all the comments I've read. Is everyone bringing bear canisters? I was under the impression they are required (but maybe just seasonally)? I have one ready to go, but wouldn't mind leaving it behind if the locals know better.

I don't believe bear canisters are required until at least May 1. I didn't bring one when I was there last April.
