Mark, you asked what do you do to warmup for Whitney? Hang out with 5 friends on San Gorgonio while waving to the friends on Baldy (and Jacinto, north fork, etc.). We missed the cookies.

Pictures are here

Damn Steve, I was the one that walked up to you and said decisions decisions..I could have met another new face..

Simon: I knew it, I knew it, I even did a edit and said that I had to put smily face on there so no one would think I'm serious, but then I deleted it saying to myself nobody would think that...good statement though Simon

BTW: As it stands I'm only going to the notch, kickback with some bread and sardines and watch the show!

Mark , how can you possibly go all the way to the Notch and not then summit ? That would be too much of a tease for yourself , surely ?
BTW if you plan on watching the " show " , make sure you are out of the fall line !

A few photos from this weekend.

The drainage below LBSL was in sorry shape due to fast melting snow. Even dipped a boot while trying to be very careful crossing a snow bridge. Stayed on snow on the way up, but used the E-Ledges on the way down.

If DMatt is right about this storm and a few feet fall to the lower elevations, the climb to LBSL could be a problem. Hopefully, we'll hear to the contrary.

Frog Pond/Barney/Girl Scout/Thor Lake has enough room for a lot of people to camp, but it is very exposed to wind. (I wanted to do an overnight up there, but backtracked to the trees above Clyde Meadow after failing to find any decent shelter from the wind.) If we don't want to do a lot of work building walls, or caves, I think an alternate site would be appropriate.

BTW, I got an invite from Kurt to go do the Underhill Couloir next weekend. Should I go?

Simon: Conditions, conditions...I have no harness no ropes if someone wants to cut 1x2 steps leading to the top I'll walk up ..

Thats why I said "as it stands" I could change my mind, but just snowcamping, going to notch, hang with friends will do for me..

I can always come back this summer and climb up... We'll see..

Nice photos Richard ! They seem to confirm that the Portal Road was clear to drive all the way up now , yes ?
If there is more snow tonight/tomorrow that could all change of course .
What is the advantage to camping at Girl Scout/Frog Pond/Thor Lake over a place on the normal summer route above UBSL ? I figure if SMI camps where they do at around 12,500 ft. , it probably takes less effort in winter which is a good thing !
If you want to climb Underhill , then for goodness sakes go with Kurt !

OK this is funny. Stacy (Biletchick) and I (Curt) were watching the skier come down the chute. If you look in the picture you can see two dots right below the large rocks in the middle of the bowl. That's us! We also could see people standing at the top of the chute. How funny is that? Small world huh? See you out there soon.

Yeah, that's me. The snow was kinda funky--very changeable in the chute. I ended up side slipping until it opened up. Even that was sort of weird. It would build up under my skis so I couldn't get an edge.

Mark--you did meet a new face! I'll remember you next time.

Curt: I saw several people working their way up the east side of the bowl when I got out of the chute. They were all stopped. I though "oh crap, are they watching me?" I hope not, 'cause it took me a while to find something I trusted to start turning in. Musta been kinda boring to watch, if anyone was actually watching.

Jeff, thanks Yeti dude! It was another awesome day with great friends. Looking forward to the next adventure.

I have to learn 2 things, how to do the Yeti howl and make the killer cookies (we're hooked Mark).

Hey Steve, Oh yes we were watching you. We both said that guy is crazy! After we made the summit we went back over and looked at your tracks going down that chute. I will tell you from the top I think your even crazier than I did from the bottom (crazy in a good way of course). Keep up the good work. It's always fun watching people push the envelope and showing us what's possible.

Well everyone,
It looks like the week we've all been waiting for is finally upon us! Just curious about a few points:

I'll be heading up to Lone Pine Thursday morning and will pick up at least one permit for myself. I can probably add someone on mine if need be just let me know.

Is there running water in the North Fork right now in the vicinity of our possible campsites? Just interested if melting snow is going to be necessary or not regarding how much fuel I'm going to need.

Was there any final arrangement agreed to with SMI regarding logistical support, ropes, etc? I just wanted to be ready to help out financially if necessary but either way is fine with me.

What time are we going to meet and where on Friday? I'll probably be staying at the Portal or if the road is closed, as high up as I can park my van.

Any other pertinent items that should be brought up?

Finally got to meet GigaMike and Dave G. on Sunday up on Baldy, nice talking to them both. Mike was heading for the summit and he was moving pretty quick but I didn't notice any Twinkies, maybe he just moves fast normally?
The next few days are going to be pretty hectic with last minute details and packing but I can't wait to get up there on Whitney with all you guys, cya soon!

Adam and I are hoping to get in to the hostel late Wed and then depending on conditions, camping at WPS, or LBSL, or UBSL on Thu. If we make it a good ways on Thu, we may do some exploring towards Russell or over the ridge towards Tulainyo on Fri. Thought I'd let the group know just to keep all informed. Hope to see you on the way Mark.

Greetings all,

I finally registered as a user rather than just lurking and living vicariously through my wife (Carole aka Sandi_Carole) and friends (Mouse, Arthur (Zombie), Yeti (Scolli), GigaMike, James, Shin, Doug Sr and all the others) I've been hiking and climbing with in the recent past. Go Team Hypoxia! Maybe this makes me "official?"

Anyway, weather looks like its shaping up to co-operate handsomely. From the National Weather Service:

For Portal:

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 51.
Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21.
Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 51.
Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 18.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52.
Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 23.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 51.

Up on the Mountain:

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 35.
Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 12.
Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 32.
Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 10.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34.
Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 14.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36.

Can't wait to see and climb with you all!
