Mike and I will have the two 8.8mm ropes. I've got another 170 meters of 11mm (3 ropes) if someone wants to carry a third one up.

Mike is talking to Wes about bring some gear and setting the belay anchors up for us. None of this is firm yet, but if the gear gets up there, I've said that I'll hang as long as it takes to get the people who want to give it a go up. Harness and knowledge of its use would be necessary.

Still haven't heard whether any of the people heading up for the 3 days are willing to carry my other shovel. It'll probably be needed for setting up camp.

Hey Richard,

Sorry for a non-reply on the shovel issue. I have one and will be packing it up so there's one more....

I'll also probably have a shovel. I'm piling the gear up right now and will start winnowing it down.

I just picked up a ladder at Home Depot for the Final 400. Arthur said he would carry it up.

Sounds like enough shovels are headed up the hill...

Final decision on the ropes: They will only be available for the descent from the summit.

I'm planning on rapping down to the end of the ropes and down climbing the rest of the way to the Notch.

Don't know that you'd want to dulphersitz this terrain, so if you want to rap, bring a harness. Others who summit can get a belay down past the upper difficulties using old school techniques if they need it.

Adam and I will help Arthur carry the 400 foot-long ladder as long as the entire group agrees to dulphersitz down the chute on it together.

Too funny, Giga; it's about time somebody protected that crevasse up there! grin
You guys best be careful with that Dulfersitzing stuff. The last one I did on Middle Pal raised my voice a couple of octaves. wink
Best of luck to all of you. Hopefully I'll be waving to you from LeConte on Saturday.

Looking forward to meeting everyone and thanks for the planning. I will arrive in Lone Pine mid Thursday and may camp at U/LBSL or stay in the Hostel and meet at McD at 5 on Friday. Will decide at LP. I plan on staying a few nights in the area. Glad to carry rope/shovel if needed. Not sure about carrying the ladder, however smile

The Inyo office says the roads are being worked on today and tomorrow. Doug would probally know better but here's to hoping we can drive to the Portal!

Thanks, Jeff! I'm 90% sure I'm going, and the road is the biggest obstacle. I'm doing a day hike on Saturday if I go. I really don't want to sleep low and then start 1,000+ feet below the Portal. I'm watching for information that will help me know how high I can park. I'm guessing that I can drive my Acura RSX (upscale Honda Civic) about as far as I could drive my F250 4x4. If anybody disagrees, I would like to hear what you know. Thanks!

Sounds like a good idea to me. Anyone interested in committing to one of the other two spots?

I really wanted to get out and meet everyone here, but I injured my knee, and I am not ready to be on the trail yet. I hope that by laying low now, I can guarantee that I will be good to go this summer. This has been a very frustrating experience for me, but I hope that everyone has a great time and climb!

The injured knee seems to be a common hiker malady. I recommend kineseo tape along with whatever therapy your physician prescribes...it works wonders. Hope you get better soon.

I'm heading out the door soon, but just had a thought!
Anyone tell me the time it takes an average hiker to get to LBSL from portal?
If I have time I may try and camp there tonight.

See you all soon & drive safely.

Nick.

"Here we go" is right. I still have an uneasy feeling about this trip. Still seeing a lot of people posting who obviously are inexperienced and shouldn't be going up there. Just hoping everybody is safe and comes back in one piece.
