Hi The ROAD IS CLOSED , will be closed until it is opened, The County is working on the road. The road is closed. The road upto Whitney Portal is Closed.
Yes the road is the one going to Mount Whitney , the one you had planned to drive up ,yes that one is closed .
The road is closed, maybe they forgot to take the 5 signs down and the chains across the road and the loader parked in the middle of the road is normal, but I would think maybe the road is closed. During the day the loader might be moving material back and forth across the road and the operator thinks the road is closed SO he can do his job to get the road open.
I will make this a stickie so it stays at the top
I like that drive on the Highway across the mountains from Wrightwood to Palmdale is it open? Thanks Doug

I think I heard you can drive around the gates on ACH? The snow down there in SoCal has had to have melted by now. It's nearly May. Can't I get up earlier than the Operator and park at the top of the hill? I won't be able to make the summit if I have to walk those extra (really tough) 4 miles! Wait! It's only 3.4..... And if you shuttle your gear to the roadblock it's only 2.2. Who's gonna volunteer to walk the extra 1.2 miles? One of the really cool features of Google Maps is that you can ask it to estimate you walking time and distance.

Hey Doug, once the road does open, is the trailhead difficult to find?

Hi The trailheasd is next to the bathroom . Doug The road may be closed, and the trailhead hard to find, but I am sure the bathroom is open, else, what would the loader operator use?

So where would be a safe place to park? Can I park on the side of the road before the road closed sign? I want to be legit because I'm going to be taking a rental car and don't want to void my credit card's collision damage waiver.

I just got back from doing the MR today. The road closed sign is still there, but the cable and pylons are gone. I understand that the repair crew told people they could drive to the Portal. The overflow parking lot at the portal was over half full of cars last night.

I am going up MR this weekend, I assume if the operator is nice enough I can go and park my truck at the portal.
Will there be a problem with coming back? I don't want to get stuck @ the portal.

i can only assume everyone is wrong here stating that cars are at the portal parking lots and driving up is ok, since doug sr clearly states the road is closed until it is open....my guess is that this thread would have the info stating it was now open. so someone is wrong here, or the thread is not being updated

I suggest you consult your legal advisor. Have them review all State of California and Inyo County civil and vehicle codes to determine potential impacts. Forward their findings to your insurance (both vehicle and umbrella liability) carriers to determine if policies, coverage, or premiums need to be adjusted. You may want to make a deposit with a local bail bondsman in Inyo County in case there's a problem. You can also hedge against financial loss by buying insurance to cover trial, incarceration, and fines. Try calling AIG.
Or just use your head, make your own decision, and if it is in violation of the law don't post it on the internet.
PS- A friend of mine spent two months without his car one year after driving past one of those "Road Closed" signs. An avalanche came down while we were up skiing and the county wasn't planning on putting much effort in opening the road until just before fishing season opened.
