Oh, and what's the height of the store now? Excellent question, AxeMan! Yeah, Doug, now that MW is 14,508, doesn't that mean the WPS is "higher"? Guess you will have to change the elevation sign in front of the store. Alas, if only Tioga Pass were open right now I would think a road trip with my wife would be in order!

Obviously, since the store’s elevation increases at a different rate than the summit, in order to get the new height for the store, you must add (to the store’s old elevation) the average difference between all of the official past summit elevations and the new official summit elevation.
Don’t worry AxeMan, I’ve done the leg-work for you:
The old heights of Mount Whitney according to three different official USFS publications are 14,494 feet, 14,496 feet, and 14,497. Then, from three different books that I’ve read since 2004 I found another three official elevations, 14,495 feet, 14,498 feet, and 14,500 feet. Then, from a picture I took on the summit, there is an official plaque/tablet on the top of Whitney that is bolted into the granite. It says that the elevation is 14,496.811 feet. Then, from Doug’s book (“Mount Whitney – Whitney Lore from the Whitney Store.” (co-authored with Elisabeth Newbold, Westwind Publishing Company, 2nd Edition Revised, 2003) he writes of three additional past official elevations … in 1908 the “Government scientists scaled the summit … and determined its exact elevation to be 14,501 feet.” The book notes “The published elevation by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey based upon the sea level datum of 1929 … reports … elevation of … 14,501” feet. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey adjusted that elevation in 1940 to 14,494.164 feet. Since then, Doug, continuing from his book, wrote “Vertical control, as well as horizontal control, for the United States is now maintained by NOAA (National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration). … NOAA has readjusted the base datum for the United States. … It was determined by NOAA that the run through Owens Valley would show a +3.45 ft. to the known elevations. … a correction to the published elevation of Whitney would be 14,494.164 + 3.45, establishing an elevation of 14,497.614 ft.” And, finally, if my memory serves me accurately, I believe that the coffee cup in the store says 14,497.6.
There you go AxeMan, do the math and let me know how high the store is.
And as an aside … you can now see why state employees should not have three furlough Fridays every month.
