Tentative dates have been selected for a trip back down (up?) this year:
November 6 - 14, 2010.
(Hoping that an earler trip will allow for more "pre-acclimatiztion" (White, Whitney, Langley summit overnights). Based on the conversations I had with a couple of the guides down there, there is the possibility of better snow coverage slightly earlier in the season also. (Although we had excellent conditions last year.))
(Tentative because Mike hasn't commited yet, and I'm probably not going again if he doesn't go.)
The primary objective is to climb Orizaba, but I'd like to see/climb a few more peaks this year. It was way too convenient having a driver shuttle us around last year, so this trip will probably be set up the same way. Although I haven't picked the peaks, or researched the logistics yet (and this is open for discussion) the thought is that those who don't want to climb additional peaks can hang out in town while others do.
Yes, this is an invitation to anybody who might be interested, although the group will probably have to remain below six.
(Kurt might be down there at the same time, so if you like the idea of well-organized and very high probability of summit successes, you should contact him.)

Hey Richard, Add me to the list, I'd like to tag along. I've wanted to do Orizaba for a while, but never got around to looking into the logistics. It would be great to go up with someone that knows the route & routine. BTW, can you get Cheetos south of the border Cheers, RickG

Three Dicks Do Mexico. Cool! Been meaning to eat these up on top of Whitney, but it's been a little too difficult to get up there. (Forgot to bring them along on my summits last year.)

Hey Richard, Talked to Mike yesterday he's not sure but tell you what get a group and if you decide to bail I'll set er up. I'm going to go now no matter what and would prefer not to go alone. I travel in China and Taiwan all the time alone because I speak Chinese but would prefer to have at least one more person for Mexico. I think wheter you go or not though you should sponsor some training summit overnighters for the team that does go! Overnighter on White Mountain with Pizza Facotry Pizza from Bishop!!!

Deleted the comment that was in poor taste...
I can't title the TR "Three Dicks Do Mexico" if he doesn't go willingly.

Richard I'm committed now to. Just booked the cheap ones non refundable tickets, same flight. I think the scariest part of our trip will be LAX...I hate LAX.....

BUMP! I'm flying into Mexico City on Nov6th leaving on Nov 14th.
Emailed Luis today with Servimont, kind of early but want to get idea on availability and pricing. I know some people had some interest of going. Richard is going if Mike goes but so far seems Mike isn't going. So as of today I'm soloing it. Would love to have at least one other person joing me. I don't want to be that dude in Proof Of Life and have Meg Ryan's boyfriend have to rescue me....sorry a little bad movie humor...

T minus six (months) and counting...
I'm getting excited about this. I've been working Mike every chance I get and I think he may join us.
Been reading Secor's book off and on over the past couple of months to get some ideas on what else to add to the peak list. We've still got time to come up with a final plan, but I'm still thinking three peaks during this trip. (Better get in shape.)

Richard, here is a picture on the way up Orizaba in 1997, I'd say this is approaching the lower glacier at 15,500 ft. Once we popped over the ridge to the main upper glacier, we had a very bad hair day. I'll see if I can dig up our trail report. Harvey [/URL]

You guys got me to reflect on that trip this morning. Mexico's Volcanoes is a neat trip I look forward to doing every year. What makes it special is being able to climb a couple of great high peaks while traveling and discovering a fun country, seeing long time friends, making new friends, and learning a lot about the world around us. Here are a few memories: Me and Scott (White Tundra on this board) on the summit of Orizaba I'm wondering what the summit will look like this year. We erected one of the summit crosses on Orizaba last year. Iztaccihuatl (17,158) at sunrise. High on Iztaccihuatl with Popocatepetl in the background. Catedral Metropolitana de la Asunción de María. This is the oldest cathedral in North America. Inside the Catedral Metropolitana de la Asunción de María. The ancient city of Teotihuacan The Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan

Richard only a suggestion, I'll leave the trip Iten, to you. But an easy acclimatizing climb would be La Malinche (14,640'). Don't know how far out of the way it is but instead of hanging out acclimatizing we could summit another 14ker.....

The three would be: LaMalinche, Itza and Orizaba.
If we can find a volcanoligist to tag along, I've heard you can get a "research" permit to climb Popo. Then we could drop LaMa.
Nice set of photos, Kurt. I hope your trip down coincides with ours. It would be fun to run into you down there.

If Popo is a go go, do you know where I can rent one of these T-minus 6 months and counting, WoHoo! I better kick up my stairmaster routine from 10 minutes to a full 15 minutes Seriously, Thanks for organizing this. I’ll PM you about the plans. Cheers, RickG

To all
Glad to see this post still lives and you are all planning a visit. This trip remains in my memory as one of the greatest experiences.
I hope to be making my way to Aconcagua about the time you will return.
Richard--hope to see you in the Sierra's. I am starting to make my way up there. Spent most of the winter in Joshua Tree.
It's just better in the mountains
