I was going to tack this one on to the recent “training” thread, but thought maybe some golfers might miss it, so I decided to put it up front…

When getting ready to do Whitney, expanding your cardio capacity is obviously a good thing; but to me, the real priority of training for a big hike is simply getting on your feet and punishing them.

Here's a cool little tip I can offer: If you are a golfer, get out of your cart and walk like you used to when you were a youngster. As silly as it sounds, walking 18 holes on a hilly course three or four times in the weeks leading up to a big hike can go a long way towards getting you ready.

If you're already in decent shape, the cardio benefits are minimal; but you're on your feet, walking up and down hills, carrying additional weight for four hours over 3-4 miles…

I’m not recommending that you eschew other modes of training for golf; nor am I suggesting that non-golfers take up the game. But, if you are already a golfer, getting out of the cart and walking is a simple and effective way to prepare yourself for Whitney.

I totally agree Eric. I just bought one of those new "push carts" with the bicycle type tires, and it is great! You get a little exercise, see more of the course, and enjoy the surroundings more. Being in the golf business, I play a lot. Carrying the bag isn't what it used to be when I was younger, and my shoulders would tire quickly, which isn't great for your golf swing! But with this new cart, I can walk anywhere.

Great idea!
