That was a great video! I remember very not-shy grouse two summers ago up there. SOMETHING'S in the water.

As funny as the video is, it is also so wonderful to see animals in thier natural settings doing there own thing. With the thaw coming later this year, I don't think that this will be the only encounter.

Soooo, if the Crouse is going to be acting like that to protect thier young, think about how the LARGER (i.e. Bears)animals are going to react to what they think is a threat (however unintentional it is).

Be safe, have fun, wish I could be out there this year.

Love the soundtrack!!

Well, I got my Epic Sh*t T-shirt and I'm headed back up Whitney this weekend, but checking the weather reports, I don't know if you will be able to see it under my parka...

I got $100 on Moosetracks for round 2. Grouse is going down!!

Hey Laura, you gotta give the little guy at least some credit -- I think his eyebrow could probably be considered orange (remember ... orange?). grin

While the rest of his nappy neck looks bright yellow! I met another woman on the trail that day who was an avid birder, and she told me she wasn't even sure what type of bird that was it was so squirrely lookin'.

DougJr suggested punting it like a football, but I just know I'd end up like Charlie Brown on my back like a turtle with this thing pecking at me while standing on my belly.

Moose, wait! I'll let you borrow my two K-Bars in case they have kin! Maybe you should pack DO EPIC shirt as a reward for crowning glory!

I think it was the orange that ticked that bird off...

Nice work maintaining your composure and keeping the camera rolling, Laura grin.
I had a similar encounter by the "No Wood Fires" sign at LBSL a couple of Springs ago. Little bastard came outta nowhere--very velociraptor-like mad.

I for one find this topic disturbing, considering how much of the bird population is suffering and will be destroyed in the Gulf Coast. Should the Sierra Grouse disappear, you would miss them, yet you jest at their attempts to protect their nests.

Not exactly what I would call a friendly Friends of the Inyo post.

Seriously? Sorry, but I don't see the parallel. It's a funny video and, despite the tongue-in-cheek jesting about the grouse's prospects as a dining room table centerpiece, no one's going to harm the bird - and I think we all know that. Drawing a relationship between this thread and the Gulf situation - or any number of other calamaties that befall wildlife daily around the world - is a bit of a stretch. Let's just appreciate the undeniable humor of the incident - and this particular avian's fifteen minutes of fame.

Yep. Except in certain Caribbean locales, where most endeavors from Voodoo 101 up require a little chicken blood. Can't get any decent mojo going without a few feathers flying.

And this particular grouse is now a celebrity. It'll probably have bodyguards and attorneys-on-retainer for his/her next bipedal encounter.

Wow... you know Gary... maybe she's right. I mean, I looked on the endangered species lists, googled both Blue Grouse and Sooty Grouse (depending on whether you check the Law's Field Guide to the Sierra or the Sierra Nevada Natural History by Storer/Usinger/Lukas), and... oh, wait... it's not there... Hmmm... OK, let's check the hunting permits... no, still 2 bird limit... OK, ummm...

Oh, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I will say my penance this weekend by finding a Tree of Souls somewhere up the Pine Creek trail and plugging my hair in, thereby connecting directly to either Gaia or JOBU. Gosh, I really do hope I can be forgiven...

I wouldn't sweat it too much Laura. I hear Jobu's pretty easy to get along with as long as you keep him in rum and cigars. Unfortunately, there is that little matter of the obligatory chicken blood . . .

Back in my hunting days I spent many a day hiking up and down hills looking for Grouse. They can be quite elusive especially if they don't want to be seen. I never seemed to have much luck. So where exactly is this one? LOL
