July 5, 2000.

I'm at The Notch with my B.I.L. and 9 year old nephew looking up at the Final 400' (although we weren't calling it that back then) after having climbed up to and down from the summit plateau two or three times looking for someplace that will work for the slightly intimidated kid. I've given up...

Along comes this distinguished looking gentleman and his teenage(I think Mike was still a teenager?) son. We have a conversation for a few minutes and I explain that I've gone left, gone right and just can't seem to find a way that seems easy enough.

Wayne then leads us up to the most beautiful exit to the summit plateau and the kid achieves his goal.

I've been calling it Wayne's Chimney ever since...

If things go as expected, I'll be up there on the tenth anniversary of that fine day. Thanks Wayne (and I'm sure Matt thanks you too)!

Well, then I guess my naming of the easy chute from the Southeast Glacier to the upper snow field on Mt. Ritter can be "common usage," too!

Owen Malloy gave me the pointer in 1998 to going around the far (uphill) side of the "three-toed buttress" and I started calling it "Owen's Chute" in my route descriptions from then on.

I've seen a couple of other Mt. Ritter trip reports refer to it by that name as well, so apparently it's catching on...

Richard, you are most welcome!

That was a memorable day that my son and I still cherish.

Is 10 years long enough? Well, I know for sure, time will tell!

Rick G led me up my first MR and through, what he even referred to on that day as, Wayne's Chute. That route makes the Final 400 a piece of cake.... as long as you can get ON to the Final 400!

Hi, thanks for the post. Any photos or other beta to help someone find this chimney from the notch? I would love to know exactly where this is. Thanks..
