"1. I'll be going up the easy way if MC comes down. Otherwise I'll be heading up the NE Ridge. Depending on DMATT's forecast concerning T-Storms, it will be either real early, or fairly late (after breakfast at the WPS)."
-Yep, either schedule will work. On routes, I was planning NE ridge too. But we'll see how it goes. I would not mind trying to get up there and see both routes ahead of time.
"2. I'll put in an appeal for a BBQ up at the Portal. During the summer, I don't like going down to town until the weekend is over."
-The feast at the portal is not a bad idea since we can have portal burgers too. But I'm pretty sure there will be interest for a hostel get together afterward (if approved by Doug of course).
"Oh, and 3. The A-Hills will be too hot for climbing in late-July, so we should plan on getting reports from Doug on the climbing up near the Portal (if that's what people want to do on Sunday). There's definitely plenty of it, I just don't know where it is."
-I forgot about that. There are no cooler spots in there just in case it isn't too hot? If not then climbing up by the portal sounds fine. Whatever and wherever the suggestions take us.

Bump, bump
I was up at the Portal over Memorial Weekend, actually, 10 days of mental and physical therapy, and during that time I had several conversations with Doug. One of our discussions centered on the proposed "WSPMB Annual group Hike."
It seems that neither of us are aware of the current status; hence the "bump."
Doug, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Issues that need to be resolved:
1) Organizer 2) Date of hike 3) Location 4) Post hike dinner (location)
Anyone????????

Paul,
There is no true "organizer" except to say that there are people that have discussed the summer group hike.
All of the details are in this thread:
2) Date of hike: July 31st. 3) Location: Candlelight Peak 4) Post hike dinner (location): Portal (with bbq's maybe being brought in).
Thanks for the bump, it's just about time to start getting this together.
As for all of these group hikes, they are pretty informal hikes where people meet and just go hike, laugh and eat. Not necessarily a guided-type trip with an itinerary set in stone. So suggestions are always welcome.
MC, how's the construction going? Are you going to make this one?

A few people "complained" (my words) that they weren't able to attend the group activities later in the Sept/Oct timeframe, so we decided we'd do it during the "high season." (Doesn't stop us from doing another in Autumn.) Candlelight is the perfect choice for this since it provides several different routes (requiring various levels of skill) and it doesn't require a permit.
For those who've never seen the Whitney Zone from LPP, or Candlelight, you're in for a real treat. Some of the best views of the Sierra Crest you'll find anywhere.
Those who aren't into climbing can hang out at the lakes in Meysan Canyon (the mosquitoes should be gone by then, I hope). Pretty lakes with massive peaks around you.

...Doesn't stop us from doing another in Autumn. As a matter of fact, a few of us have just started formulating a September 25th or 26th "old-school" hike. (No, not necessarily for old-timers, but a hike with more of a focus on the style and ethics of days gone by.) More info to come shortly---but here's a hint: Dust off those flannel shirts...

I'm one of those people who never throws anything away. I'm sure I could dig out some of my climbing apparel from the '70s.

I think Rosie still has her pith helmet from her Whitney climb in 1959 & can borrow that cool knife her older brother had in his belt.

Bring the swim trunks for the Candlelight hike. Nothing like a plunge in a cold Sierra lake.
Meet up, food and other details to come in the next few weeks.

Don't laugh Laura, that is exactly what I wore on my lst Whitney summit ascent in August 1955. You youngsters are spoiled with your gore tex boots. DISCLOSURE: I now have gore tex boots too.
I wonder what Bob R wore on his lst climb a few years before that when he was 16?

Gosh, they only came in white back in the old days, with a little red border stripe where your black stripe is to compliment your Halloween Orange.

(Gee whiz, what have we started? Bwahahahahaha!) See, when I was a kid you had TWO choices, either the Chuck Taylors OR the Jack Purcells: Sometimes I'd go with Chuck, sometimes Jack----but always black (not that there were any color choices, mind you)---and bought in a real mom & pop shoe store! (Remember those?) Okay, enough geezering. Look for the September hike info in your mailboxes next week...

Okay, enough geezering. Look for the September hike info in your mailboxes next week... Times like this when I miss the "evil smiley face" option... My old CT's were white, then written all over with sharpie pen. Da coolest! (except that now I would need clown shoes on my big ol' flipper feet...)

I think one of us will have to carry a coiled gold line rope across our shoulders. We can set up a rappel somewhere and make all the younguns do a dulphersitz. Fun stuff!

Our first couple times up Whitney we just wore simple tennie-runners... we "graduated" to high-top converse in 1971...oh man, did we love them - no more pebbles in the shoes! I forgot how to post one on this site )
