> Are these times right? They seem too long. At least from Big Pine to the dirt road. An hour to go 13 miles?

It is 13 to Westgard Pass, and then 8 or so more north on the paved section of White Mtn Road, which becomes dirt past 10,000 ft. elevation. It might only take 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, in the other White Mountains...

Paul and I played around the Crooked Creek region (below the research station) to bag Station and Red Peaks yesterday. While the drive in was a little trickier, we still made it in Paul's CRV. Green sage, laced with lupine, paintbrush, yarrow, phlox, and thistles; mountain mahogany and bristlecones; multi-colored rock with great views from the summits. Lots of reasons to play in the Whites!

Rest of the pics are here.

And yes, the drive times are pretty accurate. Took us two hours to get to our spot from B-town yesterday. Have a great time exploring!!

Has anyone ever driven to the summit of White Mountain for thier open house? It is on the first Sunday of August each year. It will be open this Sunday. A friend and I were thinking on going.

It's a really nice setup when the research station opens their doors. They usually have talks and food throughout the day, and it's pretty interesting to see all the exhibits and posters of what they're working on.

There are two stations up there: Barcroft (which most people go to in order to save 2 miles on the trip up White) and Crooked Creek, which is before the Patriarch Grove. I was wondering myself if they open the CC facility during the open house. Beautiful looking buildings there!
