If anyone has been here any advice would be greatly appreciated. In looking on-line it appears to be better suited for 4 wheel drive enthusiasts and the like. Is access available in regular vehicles? Is there hiking in this area?

Yes, there is lots of hiking and lots of fishing to be had. Peaks: Olancha, Monache, Brown, Templeton. buy yourself a copy of Exploring the Southern Sierra: East Side by J.C. Jenkins and Ruby Johnson Jenkins. This book will give you great info and inspiration for a one-day or multi-day adventure. p.s. Bring a water filter. Cattle is grazed in the Southern Sierra

There's a lot to do, as has been mentioned. I'm heading up there next weekend, as a matter of fact. The road in is indeed a 4x4 road. It might be possible to get by with just high clearance, but getting back out there are some steep spots that have some big rocks and sand. Blackrock ranger station would have up-to-date information on the road.
