Have a permit for Tuesday, but concerned about the weather. I have heard conflicting opinions.

Has anyone been up on Oct. 2nd and can give an accurate report? I would appreciate it.

I have crampons and an ice axe, but if it's that bad, I probably shouldn't go.

Take a look at the latest web cam photo. That should give you an indication of the weather conditions. Looks like some fresh snow. I'm heading up on Wed. so I'll be keeping an eye on the weather too.

Hello Dharma,

My girlfriend and I summited at 12:30 pm on Octobeer 2. The visibility was quite low and the snow was around 2-3 inches. It was cold but not too windy. Saturday night we encountered some frozen rain at trailcamp as well as some reasonably high winds in the morning prior to leaving Sunday. Yesterday we had heard that the winds on the summit had picked up but I really cannot tell you what it is like now. It appears the temps are dropping and by the portal webcam, there is probably still some weather up there. Dmatt was right on regarding the rain we encountered Friday night as it was quite heavy at times. Check his site and go have some fun.

Be Safe.

Thanks for the info. I've been watching the webcam, and the weather reports for the summit, (which have been changing daily).

Seems like it has gone from single digits at night, throughout the week, to the teens, which is some improvement. If the weather reports are correct, by Wednesday or Thursday, there should be about 8 inches of snow. I've never been to Whitney, so although 8 inches is really nothing on the mountains I frequent, I was a bit concerned, especially around the cables. Snow on top of ice on top of snow on top of ice sounded a wee bit scary.

Appreciate everyone giving their feedback! Thanks!

Web Cam is essentially your bestfriend right now. Day hikers will have better luck than those who plan to sleep on the mountain. Now is not the time to go without trekking poles! I'll be on top this Saturday, looking forward to some decent weather.
