Congrats Richard! That's a big ol' number man - one you can definitely be proud of. Very cool the way it happened on 10/10/10. I suspect you'll reach 111 before 11/11/11? Hope to see you next summer when we're out there and buy you a very belated brew (assuming your beer has run out by then).

Richard,
Congratulations!!
Thank you very much for teaching an old dog from 10K a lot of new tricks of 14K this year. You are a great teacher and friend
to me. I hope that I got a passing grade this season except the subject of good eating habit at high elevation.

Doug Sr.,Earlene,Doug,Miles,Amie, and Portal crew, thank you very much for everything you have done to everyone come to Mt.Whitney. Your are the our final destination to all of us.

Mike: Hope you feel better soon. "Speedy" recovery! I understood now why you got your nickname now.

Tracie: Please take us out to a "Class 3" trail head on your toy soon.

Dan from San Diego: It was a pleasure to hike with you on 10/10/2010.

Please see the WPSMB photo album link.

Shin

Richard, serious congrats on your 100th summit! Looks like you had your best two buds with you so I hope you had a special day! Something tells me you would have had a bigger crowd if it wasn't for the "waist deep snow"! So when is your 200TH summit schedule that one for the summer!!!

Hey Shin I was on baldy yesterday and had the summit to myself, only 4 other people on the trail the entire time...

Richard, from my collections of quotes, these two seem appropriate for you. Congratulations, Harvey.

Rather than being deterred by the ordeal, I realized more clearly than ever before that climbing mountains was what I wanted to do. The reasons are not easy to define; the closest I can come to explaining them is that it makes me the person I am.
Joe Tasker, Everest the Cruel Way, page 16

…the objective so long striven for should not, once achieved, be sufficient in itself. It was in the nature of such objectives, and of us who sought them, that one horizon reached should lead to the next.

Jeff, you know of course that the Boardman-Tasker prize in mountaineering literature can never approach the gold standard of those two, especially Joe Tasker. Harvey

Here is my all-time favorite, and it is also appropriate for Richard P. and his love of the mountains:

In some ways, going to the mountains is incomprehensible to many people and inexplicable by those who go. The reasons are difficult to unearth and only with those who are similarly drawn is there no need to try to explain. Joe Tasker, Savage Arena, page 260

Let's make it a little tougher: 111 by 1/1/11. (That's some more sarcasm. 11 more in 2 1/2 months... Maybe in summer. Not now.)

Thanks again everybody. Thinking about Dave's question has me thinking I'll post some highlight photos from the one hundred ascents.

Congratulations on reaching 100! You've earned the right to take it "easy." How about 11 between 1/1/11 and 11/11/11?

In no particular order:

The first sub-four. I hadn't been able to get it done on the Main Trail side, so I went for it up the MR. (08/2003)

Credit for finally getting a sub-four done on the Main Trail side is due in large part to Crazy Jack's advice (and jealousy over his doing it on a regular basis.)

Snotcicles formed during a failed 10/2000 climb.

October caused me the most trouble in trying to get to a summit during each month of the year.

With B-I-L and nephew in 07/2000.

A skier in the Final 400' (04/2005).

Cycling to Mt. Whitney (10/2005).

With another centurion (06/2006).

BeachAV8R on the way down from his first summit (10/2006).

My wife on a winter attempt of Mt. Whitney (12/2004).

No comment, other than TEN BELOW was probably a conservative estimate for overnight temps for WOW! (01/2007).

In the "old days," it was almost guaranteed that I could get first tracks up the mountain. Not so much anymore. (Ground Hog Day/2007)

There are tons of others... have a look at my SmugMug site if you're interested.

I'd still like to track down the photo album from my first ascent in August, 1972.

So, what's next? I still haven't climbed the mountain with the man himself (Doug Sr., who else?).

That absolutely blows me away - I never would have guessed. You need to get up the mountain with Doug and Bob R together at least one time - The Three Centurions. Then the three of you should go up with Jack for his 100th next summer as the club expands.

Congratulations on 100.

I know we are a little late in our congratulations, but my wife and I have been busy. I climbed Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon, going from South to North rim in October. I really enjoyed it.

Congratulations from James and Rayla Voigtlander! smile

Thank you!

I was thinking about you last night as I was reviewing the What's New section of my photo website. I move things after six months, and as hard as it is to believe, our climb was nearly six months ago!
