Thanks Shin it was fun! What will be cool is if Eagle comes back from China this summer, he want's to do Whitney!!! He said if I go to China this year we can go climb a 5000 meter mountain in China......
Thanks Shin for taking care of my Chinese colleagues when they come to Baldy!!

I don't know about Baldy now the day after Christmas, San Gorgonio is looking pretty good.

NOAA has the following prediction of snow at Dry Lake between now and Wed, low amount of snow 71", high amount 104".....

Looks like good snow shoe conditions for next weekend on South Fork..

Hey Jeff,

It's been a while since we hiked. Last time was San G. I would love to join on 12/23 and San G if you don't mind another peep.

Jeff
Are you going at "group hike" pace or "solo" pace on San G?
Curt and I might be interested if we're not too burned out from Baldy. wink

Hi Could the same conditions happen on Baldy as the Whitney area , heavy snow on a base of ice ? Seems like the bowl would be a place to avoid for awhile unless you have the long grip walking devices. Someday I will tell the story why I didn't return to the Baldy area for thirty some years , this storm brought back the joys of night life on the ridge! Doug

Hi Doug-
I hear ya on the conditions. We have all of the gear, but we are not afraid to turn around if the conditions do not feel right.
I remember the ice from our day (12/4) up there and several feet of snow on top of that would be B-A-D!
We are hoping that the weather settles down a little for the weekend and maybe just a hike to the hut will be in order then we will assess the situation from there.
Can't wait to hear the story of the 30 year gap!

If somebody can find the thread from a few years back where the whole bowl slid, it might be wise to link to it here.

I'm thinking that I wouldn't want to be under the bowl for quite a while after this series of storms pass thru.

100% agree with Doug and Richard. Here are Steve Larson's pictures of the Baldy Bowl avalanche from Feb. 2005...

Does anyone know the status of Mt Baldy Rd? I saw on the news that part of it washed away. The ski area website says the road is closed.

Larry and I may be in for the Jan 1st hike depending on conditions. I can invision the bowl collapsing - which I would love to see - from afar!

Who's thinking on the 1st?

PS We do not own snow shoes frown always just struggled through.

There's a picture on the SG BB taken yesterday by a resident stranded above the washout.

Not that it will answer your question, but it does show how quickly a stream will washout a road.

My Aunt's friend's son lives in the town of Baldy. He took these pics on Monday with his iPhone.

Well that looks pretty bad up there. Hopefully all that water will subside and the damage isn't too catastrophic, that's real tough on all the people who live up there. All us recreational hiker types who can't get to their favorite local mountain aren't liking it much either. I'm sure there'll be alot of pressure to get that road fixed ASAP.

Holy crap! That's crazy! On the other hand, not completely surprising given how long and hard it kept raining.

That's above the village, isn't it?

Too bad it wasn't coming down as snow. It would have made for an outstanding winter for Mt. Baldy Ski Resort.

Looks like we may have to do Bear Canyon for a while... better workout.

Love the optimism :-)

It's hard to tell where it is. Between Icehouse and the village maybe?

The road washout is just below the entrance to Ice House canyon parking, you can tell by the fence next to the road that guy has been working to put up his fence for some months now, that's the place that is the brand new log cabin on the east side of the road, my appraiser is buddy's with that guy.

I'm down for the 1st - if the roads are passable by then. Very interesting weather we're having. I hope everybody has a safe holiday wherever your sleigh takes you.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
