The mountain gods were looking after me. My cc was charged today so I'm guessing it doesn't matter how many nights on the trail. I am now 1 for the last 6 years in getting a permit. Let the work begin. Most awesome & Congrats!! To All: I hope everyone has an amazing journey on that majestic peak, and I hope to see you up there.

Got my confirmation letter today after my card was billed last Wednesday. We will be heading up the mountain on July 4th. We also booked our lodging with the Dow Villa. I guess if you are looking for a deal on lodging your not going to find it in Lone Pine that time of year, 108.00 per night. Any suggestions for cheaper or is that about the going rate?

That would be fine for me but my Wife is not climbing and she already said no to the Hostel. I guess she will live the pampered life at the Villa!

I figure that if you have not gotten a rejection letter by now, you have gotten your permits. If they started on March 25th with the billing, they should be able to do about 400 charges a day. Therefore they should be getting to the end of July by now. My date is August 9th and they should get to it on Monday or Tuesday and I should get the letter on Saturday the 9th or Monday the 11th. All that is left is what day did I get.

Kevin, that's about as good as it's going to get in LP during summer. In summer of 2009 I stayed at the Dow Hotel (not the Villa) for about $80 per night, but the room was extremely tiny, even for just one person. I was only in it to sleep each night since I was up in the mountains every day, so it was OK for me. As I recall, the going rate at most other places was around $120/night. Congrats on your permit success!

I figured that and booked it, I just wanted to do one last double check. We stayed at the Dow once before and it was clean and they had a friendly staff.

Hi So I was wondering what to do about rates, checked the Comfort Inn 31 July 4 adults $194.99 + 12% tax would make the room about $224.00 Internet price so they will hold it for that rate, may not go up? Is this what that means. Where ever you decide to stay make a reservation and check all the hotels ,Dow Villa, Best Western , several others in town but I think they maybe owned by the same family, Mount Whitney, Timberline.
Every room is filled July/August by about 7 PM. We send travelers to Palmdale or Reno some nights. Thanks Doug

As soon as I found out the date of my permit last year(August 11) I made a reservation at the Comfort Inn. $160 for one night, 2 people, and it was the last room available. They fill up fast.

We stayed at the Hostel last year. Very nice actually. Three people, two bunks beds with a private bathroom. O.K. for sleeping at a great price.

I got home from vacation tonight, and there in the stack of mail was my acceptance letter from the lottery. Yes, me and my group will be coming back for our ninth annual one-day assault of Whitney. We will be hiking on August 4th, and this will be a very special hike for me. August 3rd is my 55th birthday, and I am celebrating my retirement from my company of 32 years at Whitney. Just like when I celebrated my 50th birthday on Whitney, I will be taking an expensive bottle of champagne to the summit to share with all of my friends.
I hope the best to everyone else awaiting to hear back from the lottery. Whitney Mike

Got my day hike permit in the mail today. September 19th, going for my 16th summit. 40 years ago I did my first summit when I was 11. I enjoy every one of them. Safe hiking and see you all at the top!

Got my permit notice the other day for September 18. I'm going for my 41st summit. 40 years ago I did my first summit when I was 19 on the 42nd and last day of a hike down from Tahoe. Every summit since has been a day hike. In a few more years I'll get my average down under 2 days.

Got my permit Tues 4/5 for Sept 11-13 Is that an omen? Bad or good? I'm excited anyway. My buddy & I are tackling this thing for the first time. Been training P90X & Insanity for the last 3 months to get fit. Just waiting for snow to melt on local peaks so we can hit them up.
