I noticed this problem this morning: I could not edit a post that I'd put up last night, that had a spelling error. I know that's a small thing, but I don't like to have them, and I correct them when I see them. Point of personal pride.

I know that the user ability to edit or delete is set by the webmaster, and is adjustable.

I also know that this was adjusted, at least at one point, to prevent some posters from being able to remove their posts.

I don't agree with that approach, because I believe that when one wants people to post, you are soliciting their words, which for all time remain their words. To take their words, without their explicit permission, does not seem right to me.

One poster in particular, has chosen not to post, and I think the community is much less rich for that. I don't know the reason, but I suspect this is a contributing reason.

I would ask that the "powers that be" reconsider this policy, and consider returning control of posts back to the poster.

Thanks for listening.

At the risk of adding a few more to the list of people who don't like me, a few random comments:

- Bob has an irrational fear of post counts.

- Bob is a MODERATOR (as of the last time I abused my administrator rights on this board), so he can edit ANYTHING he likes on this board.

- For Bob to not post conditions reports is just plain wrong.

- Bob is the one who called Laura a Narcissist and implied that she posted too much.

- Zoner Steve C set the "24 hour edit" time frame for this board. (It sounds like Doug may have changed this).

- I took away Steve C's administrator access to this board in another abuse of power.

- The rest of you Zoners should be ashamed of yourselves. Creating that site was a slap in Doug's face. Charging admission - Give me a break.

BTW, I've forgotten my admin password, so I don't have that access any more.

And there, in a nutshell, is yet another classic example of narcissistic pettiness and no class--uncalled for, unneeded, unkind and of course banal, and why most former valued and experienced posters are just that, former posters.

so....if I am a PortalStorer and a Zoner, do I get to feel pride for my PortalStorerness while I simultaneously feel shame for my Zonerness?

Should the pride negate the shame such that I feel nothing? Or do I really have to go through the whole shaming process?

Who's this Bob guy?

and perhaps the most important question for a relative newbie like myself, why in the hell is there drama on a message board about Mt Whitney?

What's there to argue about? Not enjoying the nature experience in the proper way? Snoring too loudly at trail camp? Taking up two spaces in the summit register?

I assume that Zoners are people who frequent the other board.I certainly never saw the creation of that site as a slap in anyone's face. I believe that anyone can, and should feel free to, post anywhere. And, as far as I know, there is no Zoner admission charge -- where did that come from?

I have really liked this board for years. I still do. I have also had posts disappear that I had worked hard to put together. (I am thinking specifically about all the research I did for posts on the lightning thread that must have gotten hit by a lightning bolt, but there were others. I know this happened to others.

Doug is the greatest and this board is a great service to the community. I totally respect Doug's right to run this board as he sees fit. However, I also feel that there should be places to post where there is no need to delete entire threads of interest.

I think that there is room on this Internet for both boards.

I am not ashamed of being a "Zoner" as I post there and here. Freedom of choice.

You just keep climbing your mountains, posting your TRs, and let the world decide if they want to see or read what you have to say. We "Zoners," especially I, harbor no ill will against you. I have never met you so I am not going to say anything derogatory about you or to you.

Our paths have crossed several times, Mr. Piotrowski. Some day, I will introduce myself to you and extend my hand in a noble gesture. You have a choice to reciprocate in kind.

I will be looking forward to that day. Again, I have a choice.

Have fun...

Journey well...

I wasn't there when the drama happened, and I generally ignore posts referring to the drama because it is irrelevant to why I am here.

I find both boards very useful, and like the communities that both represent. I don't pay a fee on the other board. I don't feel like an outsider there.

It is hard to run a board (I've run a few in the past), and I am grateful to the folks who do it. Especially these boards, because they make it possible for ordinary people, with little experience, to capture a little bit of extraordinary in their lives (i.e., a Whitney summit).

First off, I agree with SanDi_carole. My favorite were the "black light posters" above the waterbed at Heads and Highs when I was a kid. Hey, I also Zone and I'm actually getting along with a PortalBoarder!!!! Amazing.....please alert the media.

Both boards are informative and I have both on my Bookmarks so I can pull them up quickly. Sometimes the same exact posts show up on both boards. I've even seen variations on other sites.

As far as a fee......hmmmm, there may be something, but it hasn't stopped me from contacting Steve often (sometimes very often) for help when I need it. Both Doug and Steve have been there for me and many others who post on both boards. I have a huge respect for the posters of both boards.

The only posters I don't like are the TROLLS, which also seem to show up on each board. Both boards had one just a couple of weeks ago, and Steve and Doug got rid of him (or her.)

All that said, I really want to thank Doug for his book, his time, his message board and his kindness. He gives of himself without hesitation and that is rare to find. Mt Whitney would not nearly be the same without him.

I would have thought so, Doug, but for example, I cannot edit the original post of this thread??

I'm wondering if something got tweaked accidentally?

Note: I just edited this, I guess we'll see it that still works in the am.

Well, they're not exactly posters, but I would love to find some of those deluxe velvet portraits of dogs playing poker. They used to sell 'em by the side of the road in TJ back in the day...

Thanks for taking this thread to a happy place! I find it pretty simple. If you can't say something nice about someone, then DON'T say it. Especially on a public forum.

We all agree that Doug is a gentleman. I've never heard him say a disparaging word about a particular person, ever. There's wisdom in that behavior.

This morning, the "edit" button on my last post disappeared. so it looks like there is about a 12 hour window of ability to edit.

Is that what other people are finding, or is it just me?
