Jeff:

Seeing how much beer is already on the list, please put down cream puffs, water, and whatever else catches my eyes when i go shopping Friday night, grin for me and Norman to bring.

Also, I think I will hike with the group on Sat. Even if I hike on Sun, I probably won't get any sleep on Sat anyways...

How will the permits be handled? I won't get into LP until probably 1am on Sat but will need a permit... I have plenty of WAG bags already.

Thanks,

Kristine

Kristine,

Shina and Rosie will be getting permits. As we get closer I will suggest we have 2-3 groups depending on each individual goals. Each group will have to agree on their departure and turn around time. For instance for Shin and Me our goal is the summit and we want to start on the trail no later than 4am. It looks like there could be 2ft of powder on the trail and more than that in some areas, at least that's what NOAA is saying....Do you and Norman both need permits?

Thank you, Jeff!

Permit for me only. Norman will be driving up separately for the potluck, he has something he needs to do during the day.

Yay! Snow will be fun!! grin

Thanks again!!! Can't wait to see everyone!!!

Hi Jeff,
My goal is not the summit at all.
I just want to enjoy the hike and have a good time at the party.

I'll make my plan for the hike depending up on after the storm passes. I don't want to hike on unconsolidated snow with laborious post holing or icy and rocky trail at night especially this time of the season. I am too old for that kind of hike.

Since this is not an organized group hike, every group should pick up own permits depending upon their plan because I don't know each individuals plan at all. Mark and I will be in Lone Pine on Friday morning so please contact me anyone who needs permit. I am happy to get right kind of permits but I don't want to be responsible for the results.

Right now, I plan to get permit for "DAY HIKE":
Tracie,Richard P. ,Frank A.,Jeff S.,Frank K.,Kristine & Norman,Mark A.,Shin Total 9

Please P/M me anyone who needs permits.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Shin, that was exactly what I was coming back to my computer to post. I'm not real comfortable with the weather forecast... certainly not comfortable hiking in up to a foot of snow.

I am just looking forward to being on the mountain, and being flexible with our plans. Our goal is just to enjoy the day on the trail. (and the party too!)

Shin, my family group will be be staying at the Hostel Thursday evening. If you’d like to stop by there Friday morning when you get in we could co-ordinate how many permits we need to pick up.

Shin OK.  My plans are still go for summit so I plan on starting around 4am, whoever wishes to try for the summit is welcome to join me I'll still stick with the MT up and down.

It is a good thing this was deleted because this is supposed to be Rosie's climb... The additional people will just make it all the more fun for her.

Snow accumulation forecasts for Whitney are usually wrong by a large margin, so don't sweat it.

Thanks Richard, but if some people are hoping to make it to the summit, I say "go for it". We're probably going to have a couple groups going anyway; I'll be seeing everyone on the trail at some time, and for sure down at the Hostel that evening. That sounds great. (I SURE don't want anyone feeling that couldn't do the hike they wanted).

Personally, I think I'd like to shoot for Trail Camp, and if the trail looks good when we get there, then maybe try for the Crest. I'm just really nervous about snow and/or ice, and want to keep it flexible. I have snow traks but I think I will pick up some of the microspikes at the Portal.

Timewise - if we're starting out by 3:00am and needing to be down to the Portal by 5:30pm (to get to Lone Pine by 6:00), I think we need to set a turn-around time at around noon-1:00pm(?) and just see how far we get.

Thanks again Richard. When are you getting in? Are you staying at the Portal or in Lone Pine?

Hi Rosabella,
I'll come by at Hostel Friday morning to co-ordinate the permits issue.

This is the list of So. Cal. friends who need permit as of 10/04/2011:
Mr. & Mrs. JustBob (2)
Tracie D.(1)
Frank A. (1)
Mark A. (1)
Jeff S. (1)
Shin N. (1)
Patrick M.(1)
Ryan B. (1)
Brandon T. (1)
Richard P. (1)
Kristine & Norman (2)
Norma R. (1)
Snownymph (1)
Trailbud (1)

I'll leave all permits in an envelop with individual names at front desk of Hostel when I get them. Please pick it up at your convenience.

Please contact me by 10:00 pm on Thursday night if you need permits.

smile Look forward to seeing everyone! This is going to be fun and beautiful!

Correction: Snow Nymph will be coming to the potluck but not hiking with us. Also, she has a birthday in October too. That cake better be big enough for all the candles and the circle of birthday girls! Have a fire extinguisher ready, Doug! grin

I was planning on being in LP at 11am to get a permit. LMK if you need help with the process. Also, i will do an acclimation hike Fri after i stop at the VC if anyone else is interested.

Shin, the snow will be soft and unconsolidated. Not quite post-holing more like breaking through powdered sugar. Thankfully we'll be on a trail. The first snow on talus can become a real ankle-twister when nothing is frozen and everything moves.

Thank you SO MUCH for helping to get the permits!!! You're awesome!!!!

Norman will not be hiking, but will drive up separately for the potluck. I will be hiking, so I need only one permit.

Thanks again!

Rosie since allot of people want to hike with you what time are you planning to start? If you could let everyone know a meet up time at the "Portal". Since some are staying in town, their cars or campground it's easier to meet at the Portal.

Just looked at the webcam. Thats a bunch of snow. Trailbud and I will be up early Fri and plan according to the weather. Will also plan on getting stuff ready for the party which will determine turn around time. Will attempt LPP the snow may help on that one.

We're getting in Tomorrow... staying at the Hostel. We're going to breakfast Friday 8:30am at the restaurant on that side street that's also a bakery and has a map of the Alabama Hills painted on an inside wall... can't remember the name, but I think it's something like Hard Rock Cafe? crazy

I don't know how early "early" is for you...wanna join us if you're in town?

Rosie, I will have the day off, Doug is trying to be on the road by 10am and Lone Pine around 1pm. Are you going back up to the Portal after breakfast? Were going to go up there for a little altitude and visiting on Fri.

Jeff, I'm thinking that I'd like to be at the Portal/Trailhead at 3:00am. It just seems to take a little longer to "get situated if there's a group.

I'd also like to add that I feel so honored that people would like to join me on this hike... but I feel that I need to warn you that I'm not as fast as many of you. smile I would feel bad if I was holding up the group.

I'm going to be heading out soon... and look forward to seeing everyone in the next couple days!

I was going to reply to Norma that I'm hoping to join her for her "acclimation hike" later on Friday. I've got some last minute things to pick up for Saturday evening, but the biggest concern is picking up the permits... hopefully we'll get them at 11:00, otherwise, we'll have to be there at 2:00 when they release the rest. And yes... we'll be going up to the Portal as soon as we have permits in hand!

Norma - I'll see you at the VC at 11:00, and we can go from there.

Shin, there are going to be some people that are getting in late Friday night/early Saturday morning. i.e. Kristine's not getting in 'til around 1:00am Saturday so she wouldn't have access to the Hostel front desk. Not sure what would work best.... Is there someplace to leave them at the Portal if we don't see them Saturday morning?

Looking forward to meeting you at the Hostel Friday morning!

Rosie
