Hi All,

Kurt Wedberg, 2 time Everest summiter will be down the week of October 10th to 14th giving free slide shows on Kilimanjaro at A-16 locations throughout southern California. More info on the slide shows on the bottom of this post. I want to first talk about these WPSMB Baldy hikes.

In the past this MB has seemed like a close knit family. You may have never met the fellow bloggers but they felt like long time friends. For instance I never met MC or Richard P or Tom Cat before my first hike back in 2008 but when we met we all hugged and introduced ourselves. I know the first WPSMB Baldy hike ever was with Alan K, Richard P, Rick K and Rick G and of course GigaMike. Friendships were formed that day as well.

Last year I noticed that the tradition kind of died and it saddened me and a few others so let’s revive this long WPSMB tradition and join Kurt at Baldy Manker Flats. We will be meeting 6AM Manker Flats on Friday October 14th. You can post any questions you may have or PM me is fine as well. Below is slide show info:

Kilimanjaro rises out of the East African plains to become the highest free standing mountain in the world. It is the only place in the world where one can pass through five different temperate zones in as many days. From jungles to the alpine zone the scenery is spectacular making a climb to the summit a non technical trek like no other. Come learn why Kilimanjaro is one of the all time classics in international mountaineering.

Mt. Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa. The summit is the crater rim of a volcano that is thought to have been higher than Mt. Everest. It towers above remote jungles and is seldom climbed.

Join us as we host Kurt Wedberg, founder of Sierra Mountaineering International and veteran leader of trips to Kilimanjaro. Through colorful slides, music, and motivational narration come learn why this is a trip of a lifetime and an adventure not to be missed.

From Kilimanjaro (19,340’) and Mt. Kenya (17,058’) to the spectacular wildlife living on the Serengeti plains this presentation covers it all.

Kurt Wedberg has been a professional mountain guide since 1986 and has 81 major expeditions on his resume including two successful ascents of Mt. Everest in 1995 and 2008. In addition to many successful expeditions to Africa since 1996, he has climbed in Alaska, Bolivia, Ecuador, Europe, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Turkey, and the Himalayas. Kurt was a senior guide on Mt. Rainier from 1991—2006 and has 120 ascents of this peak and has been mountaineering in the Sierra for over 25 years. He is the founder of Sierra Mountaineering International and runs it in his hometown of Bishop, California along the base of the beautiful Eastern Sierra.

Bonus!! Anybody attending these shows can receive a 10% discount off of SMI’s February and June 2012 Kilimanjaro climbs! Participants must sign up by October 14 with a $750 deposit.

Here's a link to the first group climb we did:

http://www.rickkent.net/ViewerPlus/viewtextfile.aspx?ID=59924

And RK's photos:

We actually organized this thru Mt. Whitney, The Sierra Nevada & Beyond... (now defunct).

Kurt expressed a willingness to become involved shortly thereafter and it has become a great tradition... Don't pass up the opportunity to participate.
It's kind of cool that we (meaning WPS Gang) actually do more group climbs on John (as in Kurt's Dad) and Shin's mountain than we do up near the clubhouse.

Don't worry, I'm not back, just wanted to set the record straight..... but 10/14 is a flex-Friday..... so I will be there.

I have been on one of these too. It is a hoot to hike with Kurt and other people from the Board. I think I can clear that Friday and plan on being there.

I want to contact with Matthew on Richard's 01/19/2006 WPSMB Mt. Baldy hike. Mark A. and I met this young and strong hiker a few years back in winter. He had camped out under the trees along the trail near the San Antonio Fall and we hiked together. I want to send him several pictures to him. Please contact me anyone who knows about him.
Thank you.

Jeff, meet up at Manker Flats 6am. This is a group hike no time trials. We stop allot on these group hikes which cause me to cramp so I'll be the slowest in the group!!!

Nice kitty-kitty smile

Larry and I will not be able to make Friday's hike frown

Larry teaches scuba diving at CSUF and that is our first day diving over at Catalina Island. So, if the visiablity is good from the summit and you can see Catalina - wave to us grin

Have fun!
