Here is Bob Rockwell’s photograph of all 97 switchbacks:

The switchback numbers are hard to see here, but they do show switchbacks 1 through 97.

I honestly thought I had them all when I took the photo. I had originally planned to shoot from the top of Wotan's Throne, but that didn't work out for a number of reasons. The external viewfinder seemed deceptive, as I swear I had included all of Mt. Muir in the framing. According to Mamiya's site, the 43mm lens on the Mamiya 7II has a 90 degree field of view.

As Wayne and others pointed out your work is tremendous whether it shows 90 or 97 it is one of the most beautiful and unique photos I have ever seen. Looking at it time and again, as well as Wayne's documentation reminds me why I prefer the chute early in the season!

Again, beautiful pic. Looking forward to picking up a print.

I agree with the others - this is an awesome shot, and your story about getting it was a great read! I'll join the list of people that want one.

Kurt, I calculate that your field of view in your sensational photograph covers 57 degrees. From the spot you chose to place your camera, you would only need 49 degrees to capture all the switchbacks. If you include Muir, then you would need at least 80 degrees from where you had your camera.

Wayne: the only other view I have is the other image from the backup camera. This is the end of the tail from that camera scanned on my nikon scanner.

Since this camera was lower, it seems it just disappeared behind the rock.

From my National Geographic Topo map and Google Earth, 1-7 switchbacks look visible, but maybe my view was not down to 12,265 feet, where your camera was placed. In that case, obviously you would have to go higher to capture the first seven. Bummer. But something perhaps you can try again.

Regardless, great work on your part Kurt. You certainly can advertise your photograph as the TOP 90 of the 97 switchbacks. Looks pretty awesome to me.

Beautiful photograph !! Just out of curiosity, what kind of lantern was used in lighting the trail for the camera?

A big, heavy one. I posted a link to the lantern in my blog. It's a Coleman LED one that uses 8 D batteries.

Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce has a photo contest every year for photos taken in Inyo county. This is an amazing photo. You could consider entering it if the switchbacks are in Inyo County. First prize is $500. Deadline for 2011 I think was in the spring or early summer so I imagine 2012 it will be the same. You took the photo four nights before I summitted Whitney for the first time. Thanks for sharing.

As a longtime lurker on this board and amateur (emphasis on amateur)photographer I've seen many good photographs of the Mt. Whitney area. This night time photograph of the switchbacks is probably at the top of my list. What's really good is the story behind the photograph and the work it took to get it. Long live 35mm film!

Well, long live film anyway. This was 6x7cm medium format smile

Just got a chance to check this out. Very cool! I also liked the time lapse on your blog of the "ants" marching up the switchbacks. smile
Since you shot this late at night maybe it wasn't a factor, but were you concerened with other hikers' headlamps? Or would your bright lantern just have painted over them?
