Congratulations Shin, see you next weekend. I'm hoping LA has a heat wave... I am sick of this extremely cold weather... 21 degrees this morning outside my front door!

Congrats Shin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Christmas present from "You to You". (Would that be considered re-gifting???).

I also went up yesterday at 0700Hrs and I, also, got turned around due to high winds and the extreme cold. Brrrrr!
Other than that it was a beautiful day up there.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the great time yesterday with you and Shin. It was great to meet you and hike with you guys. With those wind gusts I have never been more scared and exhilarated at the same time!
Hope we can do it again sometime.
Thanks
Randy

Hi Mark,
Thank you for hiking with me and Randy yesterday.
It was the coldest and windiest Mt. Baldy hike ever for me and I'll remember it for long time. But we have done very well under super ugly weather. All of us got what we wanted yesterday but we didn't expect that much.

My hands still feel a bit strange from the coldness from yesterday. I went REI to get a glove liner today.

The wind was strong enough to blow me off and pinned me down on the ground near the summit.

All pictures and video is WPSMB album link.

Thank you all.

Shin

WOW Shin what a difference a day makes. RP your heat wave came the next day. I summited on Sunday and brought my temp thing. 42 degrees on the summit with winds of only about 5mph....Beautiful day to be on Baldy....Ran into Frank, Tracie and Talus...

I was thinking about heading up Baldy this weekend. For those of you who have been up the Manker flats route recently, were Crampons and ice axe necessary or helpful? Will microspikes do?

Microspikes and trekking poles will do ya. That trail is so beaten in.

Please report on conditions. I'd love to try to get up there one last time before it's full 'winter' conditions (ie needing ice ax/crampons - i don't have those skills or tools yet) if it's possible!

There is an outside chance that I may be able to hike baldy tomorrow morning as well and will likely go up and down the Manker flats trail. If you see a tall, skinny guy in a red jacket huffing and puffing, say hey.

If I do make it on the trail tomorrow, I'll post a report, tif.

it was windy and cold today, but when hiking in the sun i was able to shed layers. i went ultra light, wearing only trail runners no micro spikes or anything. that said the northeast facing slope of the south ridge was full of hard ice all day long, especially on the trail where everyone packs it down - very slippery. i saw a few people doing just fine with micro spikes however. there is so little coverage i was able to shoot straight up the scree slope just right of where the trail usually switchbacks. unless it warms up considerably you will want micro spikes on that part of the trail, if you're okay on the scree slope then you shouldn't have a problem getting up with gym shoes - although boots would be preferable for the way down to keep the rocks out of your shoes. it was pretty deserted today, so i wasn't overly concerned with kicking stuff down on other hikers, but be aware of stuff that you kick loose for the sake of those below.

other than that slope the mountain is pretty much snow free.

a little iphoneography for your viewing pleasure.

Baercave, I'm sorry I missed you. I was on the trail today too. I echo your comments. I was expecting more snow and so I brought boots and microspikes. I would not want to do the forest section beyond the rock garden without the microspikes, but boy did I miss my trail runners. Boots are completely unnecessary, as are gaiters and snowbaskets for your poles. You will not posthole.

For those who don't want any ice or snow, you will make it all the way to the ski hut without seeing more than 1 or two very small patches of ice which are mostly in the brush.

after reading your description above, which i did not see until i returned this afternoon we did see each other! i'm pretty sure i spoke with you above the ridge about how it sucked, i think you were changing shoes or something. and i'm pretty sure i passed you on the way down too, i was moving very fast with someone i met on the summit.

Shin kicked our $$@ up Bear Canyon yesterday!
A BIG group of us spent quite a bit of time on the summit, enjoying the somewhat mild conditions.
Great time at the Lodge in the Village afterwards.

Our is me, Ty and xSpeedy.

I'm sure there will be plenty of photos.

Had a great time with everybody, what a great group of friends..

I started at Manker at 2:45am(had to get early start Shin,Richard and Giga were hiking together smile ) watching the moon on my way up Register Ridge, when I hit the back bone trail I didn't see the moon again until summit, after I reached the summit at 6:01 just in time to see a 1/8 of the moon left, within 10 min. the clouds took over the moon not seeing it again..Nice to see some members I don't see very often..

Hi Mark,
I enjoyed your picture very much. The picture with a shadow of Mt. Baldy and lunar eclipse are very interesting. You should organize a "Moon Light Hike" on Mt. Baldy since you have most experience and knowledge of night time hiking on Mt.Baldy.
Some views are only seen at night.

We really had a good time with WPSMB members and BBC members.
(Richard P. GigaMike,TracieB. So.Bay Mark, Snownymph, NormaR., Cheryl,Ron,Ty)
We met John and Carlton who are members of WPSMB. Sorry,we didn't have much time to visit yesterday because everyone was hungry for a big lunch at the Lodge.
Looking forward to hiking with you next time.

It was very nice to see GigaMike on the trail again.

Richard,please rest up on Sunday.

All pictures are in WPSMB album link.

BBC's motto is No leader,No rules,No drama. Just hike up.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Mike entertaining himself while everybody waits for me to catch up.

Can't recall a day when there wasn't a marine layer blocking this view.

Tracie, Cori, Norma, Cheryl.
