Carlton and I had a great day Saturday on Baldy and the highlight was meeting the WPSMB group including GigaMike, Cori, Norma R., Ron and our Baldy idol, Shin! Great to meet all of you and sorry we missed Richard P, my personal Whitney idol. Love the trip reports on the member picture sites. Shin, you are the best, love your picture site and commentaries. I started this hiking addiction at almost the same time, June 2004, as you and somehow you have summitted Baldy 250 times since, wow! And Norma, Hiker Neil and I enjoyed meeting you at the Portal this summer and I am an avid reader of your interesting and varied hiking adventures. GigaMike, glad you are back. Carlton and I hope to continue our Baldy adventures through the winter and look forward to meeting up again with all of you. Thanks for the invite to the Baldy Lodge lunch, I had family from back East visiting and had to make a beeline back home but am looking forward to a future lunch. Every day on Baldy is a great day!

Dang, sorry I missed everyone...
I got a late start on the Bear Flat trail (my first time on that hard route) and hit the summit around 2pm. Didn't like the snow/ice section in that little bowl around 9K feet so I went down the Backbone trail and hitched a ride back to the village.
Maybe next time.

It was a fun day for sure. Always nice to run into friends on Baldy. Just a little ice above the hut. No snow in the bowl frown

Sorry I missed y'all. Will and I must have passed you by when we skipped the hut on our descent. The eclipse was pretty interesting, although like Mark, we didn't get to witness totality. (I couldn't hang out since I was on a hike and bike and wanted to get home before dark.)

Belated congratulations to you, Shin, on achieving another Baldy milestone -- the hard way!

Hope to see you all in them thar' snowy hills real soon.

Not much snow there on Friday December 16. A few icy patches up to the Hut and a few inches on the ground above there. Ice axe and crampons were in the pack but never needed. I wouldn't go up there without them though. Here are a couple pictures:

The Baldy Bowl from the road below.

The Devil's Backbone from the rock garden.

Since it was light raining Saturday night here in Torrance I didnt go up to Baldy early because of ice on the road, I arrived at 5:50 this Sunday morning, with a light coating of ice on the road after the turn off to go up to Manker Flat. I drove real slow around the turns and up the road, as there was no tracks to follow as I was the first one up there I guess, I even beat the sand truck..At 6:25 I hit the trail arriving at the hut at 8:00,had a bite to eat fill my water bottle and headed for the main bowl chute before heading up chute I saw Shin and Jeff across the way heading to the hut, said hello there and Jose from Encino was right behind me and he heard me tell Shin where I was going and he followed me and we were partners for the day..

The Main Bowl as you can see in the pictures is not in great shape very soft snow, when you kickstep most of the the time you hit a rock. 3/4 the way up I put mircos on as the closer to the top the more slipping I was doing the last 1/4 of the chute most of the time I was on all 4s climbing up..At the summit it was a blowing and 17 deg. lasted 5 min. up there...There was from 1 inch of snow to 15 inches(in the drifts)..
Came down reg. trail...This was my first hike with my new Lowa Mtn.Experts boots everything work out good feet stayed nice and toasty no bruised toes... Another great day on Baldy

It was nice meeting some of you from the board last week. After seeing the forecast of snow on Baldy, I decided to do the hike again in the snow. Here is a link to a video I made of the hike on Saturday. It was a little cloudy and there was some wind on the ridge, but not too bad

Rumor has it that some of the regulars will be running around Baldy Friday morning again - it's only a rumor at this point but you know how rumors spread smirk

Great pix Mark, sorry I missed you - wasn't feeling well but changed my mind at the 11th hour, came up with Trailbud Doug the birthday boy and his son Ryan. Ryan's first time on Baldy. He went up and down the bowl with instep spikes. eek

Another great day on Baldy just hanging out with friends. smile

Rats, that sounds like fun...too bad I have shopping to do. I'm assuming there is snow now at the TH right? If so, I can call a "sledding" trip for the fam and sneak in a climb.

Cool Patrick! We are going to hike...time and distance are TBA. We want to do the dinner thing with Jeff and Shin, but don't want to sit around for 2-3 hours in between. I'm sure we'll see you up there somewhere, if you stay on the ski hut trail up and down.
If we don't see you, have a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! grin
Take care,
Stacy

ps John, thanks for the update!

At the Baldy notch today at Mid Day, Temps are below 20, wind approaching 40MPH, wind chill below zero. Sounds like fun!

You all dress warm.

Hardly any snow to speak of all the way to the south side of the "rock garden" past the Ski Hut - still Icy in the shady spots but not much snow. There's patches from the top of the ridge to the summit but not much else. Have fun, Happy New Years smile

I went up today. All I can add to lilbitmo's report is that I was glad to have microspikes going up through the trees to the ridge. Didn't need them before that or after. There was a cold wind on top, otherwise it was a warm, sunny day on the mountain.

Happy New Year to all!
