I'm still planning on Whitney in April. If we don't get significant snow it's looking like the Main Trail will be my route of choice.

I'm looking forward to the group climb too. I have my sights set on going up the Mountaineers Route if possible. Let's hope for some good snowfall in the next few weeks.

My comment is: There's is a LOT of interesting terrain over on the Main Trail side that could keep you busy for more than a few days... In case you don't get the hints... that couloir at center in the top photo has ice under the snow... The Marsh Couloir (at left) would be an alternative to the usual Bowl climb up to Tral Crest.

er... uh...
Sorry Tracie, there isn't anything near LBSL in either of these photos.
The top photo is the "east" end of Wotans Throne and the bottom one show the Sierra crest from "north" of Mt. Marsh to Discovery Pinnacle.

I've pretty much given up on this "winter" - would love to do it, but gas prices are out of sight for multiple trips this year. Still a chance, but unless it dumps a LOT more snow for some decent backcountry skiing in April, I won't come west until summer when the kids wil be able to join me again.

I'll try and get a photo of at least the Final 400' on Friday.
My thought is that things won't have changed much with this last storm... it was real windy again, so I think the top of the mountain will have been blown clear. I hope I'm wrong!

I'm still in.
Undecided as to route and possibly summit day. Starting up Friday. Summit Saturday unless altitude is kicking my butt. In that case Sunday and out, or just out.

Have fun JimQ (and the others). Wish I could join you. Should be a roaster up there, bring lots of zinc oxide. Enjoy!

A couple of us are unofficially going up the Main Trail side of the mountain on Saturday.
As I said in a private e-mail, I don't have any real desire to go up the MR with snow conditions that are barely adequate to make it seems like a "winter" climb.
There were enough people on the Main Trail side last weekend to make the climb up to Trail Crest fun this weekend and the steep traverses on the west side always keep things interesting.

I will have snowshoes with me, but I'm guessing that I won't use them.
Snow should be firm in the early morning (on the boot track) and I can deal with post holing in the afternoon on the way down.
I'd definitely have some if you're heading up mid-day.

Lazy morning at Alabama Hills Cafe. I'll hit the trail at about 900 and aim for Trail Camp. Whitney Portal was well above freezing last night so im probably overpacked.

When I say lazy, I mean it. After a 90 minute BS session with Doug, Doug jr. And Myles (keeping them from their work) I hit the trail.
I'm equipped for subzero temps and it's about 80. That combined with my late start is looking like serious post holing is store for me.

You are in store for one heck of a suffer-fest... with this late start.
