Caught the show last night in Oceanside. Great turnout for that little store and there was plenty of munchies and wine.
Kurt's show had all the dope on the new permit system. He also clarified a lot of things that were unclear to me and others. It was a good time and informative as always.

Mark will you be overnighting on the summit so we catch you on the descent?

I attended Kurt's presentation at Tarzana last night. Big crowd, and great talk as always.
Particularly good was his coverage of the permit process, which is certainly a confusingly different departure from the past.

It's not a competition... but, dang Mark, I was going to try and beat you to the post!
Inside joke: I turned left after looking at the forecast. Just read it again and it changed for the worse, so I should have turned right.
Thanks Rosie. Thanks Kurt. Like the photos Mark.
Photos later (if I don't fall asleep).

Glad you guys had a good hike. I did manage to drag myself over to A16. The drive from Long Beach was amazingly quick for a Friday PM. I never go there because I generally avoid the Westside crowds. South Bay Mark showed up and gave me the dirt on the Baldy hike.
Browsing the store and chatting with employees I was reminded that A16 is the real deal, unlike a certain other chain that seems a bit more of a poseur anymore. Some great sales right now- Jetboil GCS and Helios are 30% off. Last years' Thermarest Neoair 40% off.
On to Kurt's talk. Very good, very entertaining. Lots of plugs for A16 gear and expertise- but appropriate. This talk was about doing Whitney as a overnight trip. He did a good job of emphasizing training in similar conditions. Also doing overnight trips beforehand so you know your gear and how you will sleep on the trail.
Then there was a quiz where he gave out trinkets. I was sort of holding out for the final question with a snow travel course as the prize- but then he asked who first climbed the MR. I felt a bit guilty about taking such a softball but answered "Muir" anyhow. Prize was a three-fer of Nalgene bottle, Croft's Whitney book, and a pair of very fancy body-mapped merino hiking socks. Small for me but my son will be able to wear them probably next year.
If I had been giving advice I would have offered my sure-fire, family-friendly plan for success at Whitney. Make a week of it. Plan the hike itself for Thurs-Sat. Start the Saturday before by heading to Mammoth or Tioga. Have a fun 5 days playing, hiking, riding bikes, etc. at 9,000-11,000'. Then head to Lone Pine for a good night's hotel sleep. Laugh at the altitude!

So.BayMark,
I checked Richard's photos. Way too much haze to see Mt. Whitney 162 miles away.
By the way, your compass may have been pointed at Whitney at 338 degrees (due to possible compass internal errors), but from Baldy, the correct direction to Whitney is 335 degrees magnetic north (347 degrees true north).
Just in three compass degrees (from 335 to 338) there are 139 named peaks in the line of sight from Baldy to the Sierras.
Thanks for posting!

Thanks for a great week in So Cal! Special thanks to Adventure 16 for once again hosting these clinics. The Whitney presentations went really well finishing last night with the grand finale at the West LA Adventure 16 store where 118 people were in attendance. Lots of great questions from enthusiastic audiences at every store! While in So Cal I managed to get out rock climbing and on Friday we had another great Baldy hike. In spite of the lack of snow it was a great day to be in the mountains. A group summit photo is below. It was great seeing so many of you this week and to have the opportunity to meet a bunch of new faces too! Thanks everybody!!

I hope somebody captured a video of Mark's high speed scree descending technique. 'Aggressive' pretty much sums it up. He was having too much fun.
