Nice sets of photos guys.
Shin, remember what I said about recommending Doug sell these things as "One Use micro-spikes?" Maybe not!
I may be down in LA next weekend if you're available... maybe a Sunday morning climb before I head home?

Hi Richard, The Chinese microspikes are perfectly fine on the snow. But the product quality is clearly visible. It is a good rental unit for the store for the tourists for snow use only. It is better than nothing and it is lighter and safer than crampons for the beginners.
I used U.S. made micros on snow, dirt, rock, gravel, sand, and all mixes but there were no issues of any kinds at all. Since the Chinese one's rubber part is stiffer and the continuous tension to the metal link,it maybe very easy to break under extreme tension. I'll keep on using it till it falls apart.
Sunday morning is on if you are in town.
Shin

Taking into account the fact that Baldy may get about a foot of snow later this week, do you guys think that crampons or snowshoes will be necessary to reach the top this weekend?

My personal opinion is that in the Baldy area one should have at least micro-spikes. I have never used crampons, but I use micro-spikes and they have helped me a great deal in the snowy terrain of Baldy.

I'll be on the route Friday and will post conditions. Forecast is for 12" tops by Friday, the mountain is reporting 5" dense heavy snow at the notch as of 3p. Maybe we will get enough coverage to climb the bowl direct this weekend.

A Friday trip report would be great to see. Looking to do Ski Hut Trail on Saturday, but only if there's NOT a lot of new snow (I don't have any snow gear) Thanks!

We went up Baldy using Ski Hut trail today,(Wednesday). In the morning there was snow starting at the Ice House turn off. We wore microspikes from the car at Manker and did not remove them all day. After the Ski Hut there was 6-8 inches of new snow, we did not see the bowl because of fog and falling snow. Lots of wind and snow and sleet and cold; on and off all day, we were covered in ice by the Summit. By the time we returned there was no snow at Manker and the roads were clear, but it was getting colder. Conditions were actually pretty good and will certainly be better once the weather settles. Baldy seems to change daily this spring. Today the view from the summit was limited. Summit Bush by asbufra, on Flickr Summit by asbufra, on Flickr Trail by asbufra, on Flickr

Those are some awesome photos. How was it navigating through the fog and snow? It looks like you had white-out conditions. Good job!

Thanks guys, the heavy wet snow was easy to walk in so it was not that bad. The hardest part was getting out of bed at 4 AM and driving up in the heavy rain, trusting it would be snow at Manker. The only time it was hard to navigate was the last 300 yards to the top, we just kept going up, feeling our way until we met the ridge.
Dave C., These are the April conditions I mentioned. I don't know about winter gear, but I was damn happy to have a warm coat.

Thanks for keeping me posted, Frank. I still plan to go, but will probably bring a little goose down along with my Microspikes!

More wetness today, snow level about 1K higher than forecasted, between IHC and Manker when I left at 3p today. Lower route was heavy and wet and should freeze solid tonight, microspikes will be helpful tomorrow. Lots of POW up high, about 8-10" new at 2p today and it absolutely poured the entire ride home, maybe we will make the 12"-18" forecasted above 9K.
Lots of wind, more to come tonight so there should be many a drift up high.
Lots of thunder and lightening this afternoon, fortunately I was far below by that time. Saw a Bobcat at the trailhead with a squirrel hanging out of its mouth...hadn't seen one in a while, nice to see the food chain hard at work. Anyone heading up early tomorrow take your time the road is littered with rocks, from IHC down was a river.
And now it's sunny at the beach, gotta love California.

Beautiful pictures!! The ones on the summit above the clouds as the sun rises are so dramatic!

Beautiful! Are the pictures posted in reverse order? It looks to me like the end sequence is going up to the summit via the West Bowl and the beginning sequence is (obviously) on the summit. In either case, I wish I had been there.
(2 minutes later) OK. I started with the photo dump and just now read your trip report that explains the sequencing. Burt

Hey All,
Anyone know if this storm dumped any white stuff and if so down to what level. Storm seemed pretty warm...
Thanks, Rick
