I hiked Whitney last Thursday and then did Baldy this Tuesday. I think Whitney is a good conditioner hike for Baldy, not the other way around.

OK, I know Whitney has the edge in altitude and distance but the Ski Hut trail is the bear, so to speak, for steep, lousy footing. (The Bear Flats trail is unspeakable.)

Keep on keepin' on.

R.I.P. Register Ridge. The last few times I've gone up the Ski Hut trail I've noticed that the lower end of the Register Ridge route is blocked by brush and rocks. Today I stopped in at the Visitor's Center to ask about it. Mr. Ranger Man said the trail maintenance people do that when an informal route gets used so much it becomes an alternate to the established trail. Register Ridge certainly fell into that category.

Shin has now hit #286. Rick Graham chased us (Dave G, Carole C, Talus, Shin) up the trail carrying 55 lbs of weights, well a 25 lb weight and 5 gallons of water, in his pack crazy I think it's #5 or 6 for Talus smile

Hi Tracie,
Thank you very much for organizing a local memorial hike for "AsABat" last weekend. Your personal card was very nice.
It was very nice to hike with Carole C. and Dave G. again.

The highlight of the day:
1) Rick G.'s special training method.
2) The recently erected wooden display board with map box at the trail head was gone. Removed or destroied by someone?
3) The trail head of register trail was closed by rocks and dead trees.

Pictures are my photo album link.
Thank you Tracie B.for a fun hike.

Any first hand weather reports for Baldy? I'm thinking about taking my kids up tomorrow. This weather report shows it is currently 59 degrees F at 10:00 am, but that seems hard to believe with how hot it is down the mountain. http://www.mtbaldychamber.com/weather.lasso

I use this NOAA page to check Baldy weather: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=34.29353230038843&lon=-117.65945632812497. I have found it accurate as far as conditions such as possible thunderstorms go. This weekend looks clear all day, every day. You'll see that it is based on Big Pines at about 6900' elev. Obviously, it will be cooler on top. I don't go up Baldy without a layer for warmth. It can be hot almost all the way up but an uncomfortable chill wind can be blowing at the summit.

Perfect weather today. For the climb up, I don't think it ever got over 73, including on the top. Wind was not bad. Visibility was clear enough to see Catalina, San Clemente Island and even make out th individual buildings in LA.

A near perfect day for Shin's Number 288 yesterday... we were so fast, we got to have breakfast at the Mt. Baldy Lodge Restaurant (better than lunch/dinner).

Does anyone have a time guesstimate for Badly via Bear Ridge?

A book I have, says the following:
12 miles
5800'
7 hrs

Which is fine, but for Cucamonga Peak it says:
12 miles
3800'
7 hrs

Seems that the Bear Ridge hike should take longer.

Hi,

I'm assuming you mean the Bear Canyon Trail. If so, that sounds about right. I have done both and they both took me about the same time to complete. Both are excellent hikes, but the Bear Canyon Trail is more exposed, so I would not do that one on a really hot day. Bring at least 4-5 liters of ice water if it's hot.

Have fun out there!

Thanks Joyce, that's probably the hike I'm referring to. I'm just surprised that the extra 2000 ft of climbing doesn't add much time to the hike.

I just found this:
Quote:
Trail name: The USFS fact sheet refers to the trail as Bear Canyon Trail, as does the signage on the trail (7W12). The Tom Harrison map calls it the Mt. Baldy Trail while the USGS topo map labels it simply Baldy Trail. Jerry Schad refers to it both as the Bear Canyon Trail and the Bear Flat Trail. John Robinson calls it the Bear Flat Trail or Old Mt. Baldy Trai

Joyce,

I'm a little worried about finding the trailhead in the dark. Is it hard to find?

Thanks!
