One of the comments to the article implied that Steck was there to go for a speed record also...
Steck VS Kellog... who'd win?

I just heard on the news this morning that there were some fatalities on Everest this weekend... my heart skipped a couple beats at the beginning of the news clip when they said a "man in his 30's"... I don't know how old Kurt is, but I was holding my breath until they said the man's name. How very, very sad. http://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2012/05/20/everest-2012-weekend-update-may-20-summits/

Reading the comments on Alans blog from family and friends of the climbers that didn't make it down is heartbreaking. I know there a limited number of permits are issued, but not how many climbers per permit. http://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2012/05/20/everest-2012-weekend-update-may-20-summits/Scroll down to "weather window" (can't get the picture to post).

You'd never complain about the Mt. Whitney Main Trail after being in a line like this. Doc, I got the West Ridge Book today...

Kurt,
You took 3,000 pictures ????, it took me an hour and a half to look at the first 1500. Will have to fix a sandwich and chips to finish the last ones. Pictures are incredible, I plan on traveling to basecamp in a few years, the pictures were just amazing. I have several questions about your trip, hope to make it over to the 395 this summer, I will stop and say hello.

From your Sierra Mountiaineering blog the most stunning note was, "4-5 breaths for each step" !!!!! Now that's determination!

THE SILENT HIKER Definitely get in touch when you're headed to Bishop. I'd enjoy talking to you about a trek to Everest Base Camp! I actually took over 3400 photos. I whittled it down to the 2900+ that are posted. Happy to hear you enjoyed looking at them!! From your Sierra Mountiaineering blog the most stunning note was, "4-5 breaths for each step" !!!!! Now that's determination! Thanks!!

Filmmaker and mountaineer David Breashears speaks to the "CBS This morning" co-hosts about his experience on Mount Everest when four climbers died, reportedly due to overcrowding, and the dangers of climbing the world's highest peak. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7409598n
