They are all well and looking strong after their latest trip to camp 2 (rock falls on Lhotse stopped them from getting to C3).

Kurt's blog is here: http://sierramountaineering.com/blog/

I read yesterday that Himalayan Experience (Russel Brice) is cancelling their excursions this year due to the various rockfall.

Backing off is a hard call. Especially from a long-planned trip. Himex are to be respected for making it. Not exactly Everest and office blocks on the Khumbu icefall, but I had to do it last year, due to ice and snow higher up, my entire family on the trip, their first time in the Sierra. The party a day ahead of me, 3 strong young guys, turned back. The party a day behind me, two 30 somethings and their parents, pushed through two days later. Ice tunnel collapsed just hours later behind them. Its a crapshoot even on smaller hills. Wondering now what Kurt will do.

So, I see from an updated post that Kurt and crew are heading up sometime soon...

There was a plane crash near Jomsom (that's out west near the Annapurna area) that killed a bunch of people.

Bill Burke was also mentioned in a press release RE: his attempt to do the up & over & over again (N -> S -> N)

BTW: I think this just goes to show how smart KW is... he could have easily said "If Brice is heading out, I am too." The better answer is to sit around and watch what happens... conditions seem to have improved to the point that he doesn't think he's putting Fred at too high a risk by going for it...

Freds goal is making the summit. Kurt's goal is making sure Fred is able to share his accomplishment.

BTW Richard, I do recall reading TR's of you on group hikes sticking back at the tail end of the group.

It is just after midnight Saturday the 19th at the South Col. If they are on schedule they are probably preparing to leave the tents for the summit. I used to be envious of those in that position but frankly I now become concerned whenever I hear about people above the South Col. There are simply too many people up hight at any one time. I can't imagine having to wait for others at high altitude.

There are quite a few teams jockeying for position right now.

FYI: Chad Kellogg is doing his 30 Hour ABC-SUMMIT-ABC record attempt right now! That's just nuts. I'll try and post the link when I get home.

You can add Tamae Watanabe from Japan to the list of those who reached the Everest summit
on Saturday the 19th. If the name might be familiar to some of you, she is 73 and had the Women's age
record when she climbed Everest at age 63, now breaking her own record by 10 years. Climbed from
Tibetan North Col route.
