Shin, you come up with some of the best lines... Laughing too hard to think straight.

Rosie, I took hundreds of photos over the 2 days.

It was a FANTASTIC day! In fact, Friday and Sunday combine for one of the best weekends I've ever had!

Freezing cold heading up to Shepherd Pass (read that as no complaints whatsoever)! I watched my own breath for hours on end... it kept my mind off of the fact that I HATE SP!

I named myself the High Plains Drifter as I was walking down to Tyndall Creek. The creek was so tame compared to a week earlier in the late-afternoon... I was hoping it would be frozen from the severe cold... I only had to chip ice off of one stepping stone to get across safely.

Forester Pass was very fun heading up S to N. There is a huge cornice at the top that may get some unfortunate hiker who heads up late... The traverse across the gully is the only place where I had to pay attention. Two very icy spots on the North Side that require care if you are travelling early. The rest was easy enough.

The stretch of trail down to Vidette Meadow was pure pleasure... able to keep the pace up since there are so many trees blocking the view. There are some outrageous cascades along Bubbs Creek. One of these days, I'm going to have to spend some time walking the shoreline.

BTW: Richard took a rest day today... I staged for Onion Valley to Taboose Pass next weekend (I hope).

Tracie: Really, I don't count... this year I'm carrying the GPS so that I can make a comparison of Mileage To Get To The JMT and Miles Along The Trail. Yesterday was one of those days I could be kicking myself over... close to 22 miles of approach/exit for only about 14 miles of JMT!

BTW II: I think the hike/climb I did on Friday is going to become my standard route up Whitney (with the exception that I'll probably RT it, rather than head down the MT)... I don't really care for the Main Trail once the snow is gone... the Couloir on the MR is a royall PITA once the snow is gone... the Arctic Lake drainage and the close up view of Guitar and the Hitchcocks are outstanding... looking up at the N. Face of Whitney ain't so bad either. (Mileage according to my GPS is about 20, so it's definitely shorter than an RT on the Main Trail.)

Thanks everybody.

BTW III: The Crew at WPS are too cool! So much fun spending my rest days there! Lessons in Surveying from Doug... Jr. helping me solve truck problems... Myles being Myles...

BTW IV: I'm sure some of you know why I really do these live updates here and at G+...

Ahh, you're heading into some pretty country... the Rae Lakes area is SO beautiful, and Dollar Lake has some great views looking back to Fin Dome. The Woods Creek Bridge is pretty cool (and a little spooky).

I'm anxious to hear about Glen Pass... hopefully no problems there. Pinchot Pass is the name of the pass I couldn't remember last weekend... it's a gentle pass, especially when compared to Glen.

I've never been over Taboose Pass, but I've heard it's a bugger. I've also heard that Bench Lake (going the opposite direction from Taboose at the JMT intersection) is supposed to be one of the most picturesque Lakes in the Sierra... and that's saying a lot! That's on my "to do" list, but probably not this summer.

Lookin' forward to seeing your post and pics!

Taboo Pass is wonderful, especially if you like loose football-sized rocks for a trail up high, and soft sand down low. And it's an easy trail, just 6,000 feet of gain in 7 miles IIRC.

Finished up at about 7:15pm. A bit less than 17 hours for a bit more than 40 miles.

I was actually screaming in pleasure when I saw how beautiful Rae Lakes and beyond was!

Kearsarge and Glenn were easy. Pinchot kicked my ***.

I got to the top of Taboose Pass about when I expected, but it seemed to take foreever to get down.

Lots of photos later.

Hi Richard,
Congratulations.
Sorry,we couldn't get together in Lone Pine today.
I am glad to hear that you are going to rest up tomorrow.
Mt. Whitney will be there on Sunday.
Take care.

I'm so glad you got to see the Rae Lakes area; I was just hoping it wouldn't be dark when you came thru.

The times I've done Pinchot it's always been North-to-South, and I'd be starting the day from the Kings River crossing or Lake Marjorie... makes for a pretty nice Pass approach. I forget it's a long haul up from Woods Creek coming from the other direction, especially after already going over two passes. I'm REALLY glad you didn't have problems on Glen, that was the one I was worried about.

It's hard for me to put that kind of mileage in perspective... I can't imagine 40 miles in 17 hours.

Lookin' forward to some really beautiful pics :-)

Sitting at home nursing a very sore body... and I had the gall to think that I might be able to get in a section of the JMT after this climb...

Thanks Jeff. Bracci is one stout dude! Can't say enough about how much fun I had being his second... Had even more fun back at the Store rubbing it in to Myles that I've done more "technical" routes on Whitney then he has!

Back down in Bishop, on my way to Taboose Pass. Don't really know why, but I decided to do the JMT section first.

Probably send something from below the pass tomorrow morning.

Have fun Richard! Lookin' forward to hear what adventures you'll encounter on this next JMT segment!

I couldn't find if you had posted whether this trip was the segment from the Taboose Pass Trail to South Lake... or if were you going to make the big push - Taboose Pass Trail to Reds Meadow?

Yeti, good to see you and Shin on Baldy last week. Hope you had a good climb this week, we made it up Rainier without issue after the mountain got shut down for a couple weeks from weather...sad stories up there today however. Hope the cuff is on the mend.
