I had planned to do a 4-day Horseshoe - Whitney hike this weekend but my buddies had to back out. I'm heading up in any event to hike/camp Cottonwood Lakes with another friend and I'm curious about the Mt. Langley hike. My friend doesn't have as much experience hiking so I'm trying to figure out if we should try this. It looks like the roundtrip distance is similar (21 vs 22) though the trailhead is higher for Langley (10K vs 8.4K). Is the Langely hike overall easier, harder or the same as for Whitney? We'll probably go up via New Army should we do this. As always, suggestions and advice greatly appreciated!

It's really easier than Whitney and the areas of exposure are less, no cables or sharp drops. The trail in through Cottonwood Lakes is pretty and has an open feel to it. From New Army Pass it's just rock hopping over coarse talus to Langley summit. You can save "wasted" climbing by going up over Old Army Pass, but it's probably going to be pretty icy and a bit scary this early in the season..There can be a cornice at the top of New Army Pass, but maybe not now what with such a low snow year.

It's easier in the sense that they are of similar mileage but less climb. However, once you get to 12,300' it goes from one trail to thirty, since everyone has their own idea what is the best way to approach the mountain.

It's best to have someone with you that has been up the mountain and has figured out. I think we cut off about 1-1/2 hours total time from Long Lake to the summit between our first and second trips to the summit.

As previously stated, Army Pass is the preferred way up this mountain but it can be icy and dangerous early. There was still some snow on it in September 2010, the last time I was up AP.

With all that said, it's a very sandy class 2 walk up.

We completed a day hike to Mount Langley on 06-10-2012 via Army Pass. The information about the hike and the photos and etc. are here. A ranger told a member of our group prior to the hike that New Army Pass is open and clear. We watched a group go to NAP during our descent also. A beautiful day.

Hey, I ran into your party! Hard to forget that orange shirt LOL. I was the guy at the base of AP asking where in the heck the trail was and looking a little wistful. I had a great weekend backpacking around the Cottonwoods but my buddy wasn't up for summiting so we just chilled. It was a great weekend!
