Thanks Rosie. Mark.

The original plan was to try and break three finally, but I woke up with a mild headache. I chased one of SP Parker's Guides and his Girlfriend up to Iceberg and when I saw the split, I thought three might still be possible.

I almost broke six for the RT, but spent some time talking with John (Bearcave?) and Brandon. Using SC rules, it was a six-oh-five.

When I walked into the WPS, I started pointing at the 3:15 sign, pretending I was very tired and said I almost beat it. Doug smiled, so I had to admit it was only for the up portion. Doug, in his usual manner, said his best was 1:20 up to The Cables, where he turned around due to ice on the trail.

I was going to try the Triple last Spring, but warming weather ruined conditions. I'm not nearly in good enough shape this year, but ther is a Full Moon on Wednesday. Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind about the JMT...

BTW: Made my Mom's sofa by a little after 3:00 (pm not am).

Damn Doug! 1hr 20 min to cables? What's the mileage? It's got to be more than 4 miles? Baldy is 4 miles and my best time is 1hr 42min......If I came North with RP I think I'd puke at Trail Camp at that pace......

Dude, the 7-Mile Marker is below The Cables...

OK, it looks like I may need to take a “SPOT 101” class… I’m just a little confused by the readings and how to convert them to an actual location. It’s probably really easy… I just haven’t opened that page yet.

Unless the readings are off (or I’m not understanding it... which is probably the case), It looks to me as if Richard didn’t start his SPOT transmissions until he was well onto the JMT… one of the peaks that’s located southeast of his first transmission on the SPOT map is Mt. Mendel – that peak is located in the Evolution area, well past the Bishop Pass/JMT intersection.

Anyway, it looks as if Richard will be starting up Silver Pass this morning…probably be in Reds Meadow by this afternoon. That guy can move! smile

Rosie, I don't know if SPOT just wasn't transmitting or it had already sent 50 messages (which is the limit).

I'm on the shuttle to the Main Lodge. Quite the adventure!

Obviously, I didn't finish in 3 days. Even 4 was WAY too little.

Congratulations Richard!! I'm really looking forward to reading your report on this segment!! (...and really hoping you're going to say that the trail's been at least some-what cleared!)

Well, as I said... I think I need to take a "SPOT 101" class smile

Hi Richard,
I don't know where you have been.
I want to congratulate you as long as you come back to the civilization safely.
Take a good shower and sleep and hit the trail tomorrow.
Take care.

I was so offensive, the first thing I did was head to the Hostel for a shower.

Quick note Rosie: it's as bad as you hear on both sides of Tully (sp?) Hole. The bright side is that you get to skip about a bazillion switchbacks.

Really, if you keep your eyes open for the alt. tracks, it isn't that bad. Only a small bit of tree climbing.

Oh my! I was really hoping that the reports were exaggerated. I don’t think there will be much change before I get there. Oh well, I guess it will just add to my anticipation of Silver Pass! smile

Try to take it easy tomorrow, Richard. Rest up, and I’ll pick your brain about the rest of this section early next week.

Davey, sorry we missed each other. I called to tell you I got skunked at the IAVC on Saturday afternoon (no permits available), but got lucky when a group walked in to WPS... they were missing a member and said I was welcome to use the permit. I took the short way (MR) to the summit to meet them and some Whitney Celebrities.

A LOT more later... what a week!!!!!

Let's try and hook up for next Saturday if you're avaiable.

You two sure are doing some EPICs!

Hey, Richard, your strategy raises an interesting question. Does the entire party on a single permit application have to stick together? At most THs I have been to, only one document is issued regardless of the number of permits covered in a single application. Does the IAVC issue a separate document for each hiker? If not, and what if you get carded by the trail police while separated from your group leader with the single permit document?

For a few years they were doing hang tags, but I think that went away with budget woes.

I have been told that groups can split up and just need to know the leader's name if questioned about their permit.

The Rangers have radios if they want to check up on you.

Hi Jeff the sad thing is I was one of the slow ones , that 1:20 time was not going to get me in the match with Vernon and several others on the up time .They were hitting the top in just a little over 2 hours . I trained on the downhill and would meet Earlene in town for dinner leave about 1:45 before and see if I could be sitting at the table when she drove up.

This weekend a good friend from those days said he would run with me. At Lone Pine Campground he hide in the bathroom until I gave up and left him . We still laugh about those runs. Again two of his group kids went on to run the 7000 mile Indian run from Alaska to South America.

Thanks Doug
