Hi All-

Thought some of you would be interested in seeing this shot I got, being that a lot of us are from or at least hike in SoCal. It's not a great picture or anything, but it's a testament to how clear it was at the summit on Tuesday (7/24):

You can make out Baldy, Blue Ridge, Baden-Powell, Islip, et all faintly on the horizon.

From the summit, I first thought the large bump to the left was San Gorgonio and the next one to the right was Baldy, but it turns out Gorgonio is obscured by Olancha Peak and this is a shot of almost the entire San Gabriel Range.

It was obviously extremely clear after the system that moved through on the weekend cleared. Pretty cool to see what I consider 'home' from such a vantage point. smile

You can see my longer trip report:

And the rest of my photos from the trip here, if interested:

That is just too cool. I've always doubted that anyone could see the Sierra from Baldy or vice-versa; but this is pretty conclusive... Thanks for posting!

mcphersonm80,

FYI--Gorgonio is indeed visible from Mt. Whitney! A scientist from Scotland photographed Gorgonio and now holds the US record for a long distance (I recall 190 miles) land photo in the 48 states. I thought like you that the east shoulder of Olancha blocked the view, and he proved us all wrong.

Your photo is great!

Thanks! I've seen the Sierra from Baldy in winter, but not well enough to point out any specific peaks since it's a north-south range. The SGs being tranverse, though, make it easy. smile

Ah, you're right, cool info! Googled it and this came up, complete with his photo:

Guess I have to head back up and get my own shot of it now wink
