Hey all,

I was descending down the Ebersbacher ledges on Sunday September 23rd, 2012 at 7:00am when I got a bit off the usual route. I decided to take off my pack and slide down one of the ledge sections to the next. I lowered my pack as close as I could (roughly 3 feet) to the next ledge and let go. The pack bounced a few times and went over the ledge and fell into the ravine below. I got down myself from the ledges but was unable to find my pack in the early morning sun. If anyone is heading up the mountaineers route in the next few days and could perhaps look I would really appreciate it and reward the finder. The pack should be no more than 100 feet down the trail from the waterfall stream crossing just below the entrance to the ledges. The pack is an old, green REI Wonderland with a blue sleeping bag and purple thermarest bungied to the pack. There is a Kindle and my phone as the only items with any real value. The pictures on the phone mean the most to me. My phone number is 949-548-7000 and I will pay for all shipping costs to get the pack back here to Orange County.

Thanks for any help you can offer,

Rick Bobinski

I found the pack.
Just under the 3rd class to the Elephant Ear.
I'll pick it up on the way down if Myles or Doug haven't gotten it first.

Hey Richard, great that you found the pack.

Dr. Bobinski, I work in Newport Beach, just across from Fashion Island. If you like, I can bring the pack home for you this weekend as I will be up there, and deliver it to you on Tuesday. Please let me know via reply or tell Doug Sr as I will be seeing him tomorrow smile

Tracie,

Thank you so much for this. I was in my office but could not get to the phone to answer. Please grab my pack and I will come and get it on Tuesday. I tried calling the Whitney Portal store but nobody is answering and it seems the main number goes to a fax machine. I will keep trying. Could you let Richard know to leave the pack for you. I could call and follow up with this but I dont have your phone number or anyone's for that matter. Let me know what I need to do.

I left the pack at the WPS.
The sleeping bag may be missing if it wasn't inside the pack. (I didn't look inside ) I looked around in the willows for a few minutes but did not see anything else.

Great find and story Richard !!!
My son and I have found things that I had the opportunity to return things to the owner. I've found three sunglasses, a watch and some other things that got back to the owners. I sure wish people do more of what you did than taking things that aren't theirs. Good kudos for you!!!

Richard,

I called the store and they told me they had the pack. Thanks so much. Your help will always be remembered. I hope to be able to help anyone else up there if the need arises. What a great community.

Take care,

Guess what was being used as a cairn up the route?
Yeah, a big blue sleeping bag. It'll be at the Store since I'm on a MC.

Guess I can take the doc his sleeping bag...I will pick it up this weekend - please bring it to the hostel. Hopefully I won't have to traipse around Newport Beach / Fashion Island lugging the thing around like I did the backpack. Not exactly a fashion statement!!!
