Today was an almost perfect day on the mountain. Cool t-shirt and shorts weather, Catalina and San Clemente islands sticking up out of the fog. There were a lot of people on the Ski Hut trail and at the top but they were all in a mellow mood so even that wasn't unpleasant. Now if we can just fix the situation with the windbreaks... (I would propose a Saturday work party but it doesn't look like the weather will cooperate next week. If we can't schedule a work party soon it will may have to wait until next spring.)

Shin, Cathy and I are on top of Baldy. We, with a few others, rebuilt the shelter. Rather nice day up here.

We did best we can do. We have to pile up more rocks on the wall section from outside of windbreak to build up a bit more for better protection. The center part is nice and flat so you can camp out now.

Pictures are on my Album link.

First off I want to thank Shin for rebuilding the wind break, with the help from Richard and Cathy and whoever else helped..Frank A. and I went up this morning and enjoyed it, adding rocks from the back to the south side and north end, temp at this time 9:30 is 38deg in shade and 50deg in sun with a light breeze at times..

While heading up the slope to the summit we stopped and had a drink on a log and this guy with a dog comes down we pet the dog and the guy comes around and I say morning and look at his poles and said to myself I had that kind then looked at just below the grips and both poles had old duct tape [img]
on them so I ask him did you find those poles and he said yea he did at the hut and I said under the steps and he said yea, I said well those are mine I left them there to hike up baldy, I told him I'm not going to argue or fight you for them and he handed them to me and I said thanks...I learned my lesson, this was back in March of this year that I lost them..

After the summit on the way down we met Tracie and Talus and the 4 of us walked back up to the summit where we had a snack and sat at a wind break and Rick Graham comes over to us he was doing Bear Cyn..Rick went back down bear Cyn and the rest of us took reg. trail down..

A really nice day on Baldy..

Nice trip and pics Mark!

Wow! Who would have ever guessed that you'd be running into the culprit who stole those poles!! Pretty cool... glad you got 'em back!!

Bravo Shin, Richard and Cathy (was that Cathy Wing?) for rebuilding the windbreaks!

Cathy is CatB... the new hotshot on the block. She'll be leaving us Old Geezers in the dust at will fairly soon.

I want to clarify that I did not haul that gallon container of water up to the summit - Rick likes to add large containers of water and weights to his pack.

Actually, I thought you had brought it up for Tallus to share with other dogs on the summit smile I thought it was a pretty cool idea!

HEY!!! Don't like to admit it but I'm headed for geezerhood myself. Fighting it kicking & screaming. I think we are the same age Richard.

& Tracie, I've seen your dog on Baldy previously so I must have seen you but at the time I didn't know who you were. Let me know next time you go up so we can meet...

Hi everyone,
I just got an email from my friends who hiked Mt. Baldy today.
The windbreak was destroyed again by someone.
There is someone out there who hates us to enjoy hiking on Mt. Baldy.

To the A-Hole that is doing this; We will find you! I told Shin I haven't given anyone a proper beat down since College! We have enough groups of friends that climb Baldy every day of the week with cameras eventually you will be found. You are probally a Baldy village resident that has no job since you are doing this when nobody else is on the summit because you don't have the guts to show your face and do this when people can see you, just like those spineless cowards who are throwing registers off the summits in the sierras.
With All of Shin's groups of friends amongst the Koreans and the Persians and my Chinese speaking friends we'll find who you are. On any given day on Baldy in the summer there are hundreds a few hundreds of people who enjoy these windbreaks. You are not preserving the pristine mountain environment you are infringing on all these people's right to sit back and relax on the summit with their fellow hiker.....

I got lost here. Did the culprit leave a note or clue in an Asian language?

I'll join the "what a bummer" bandwagon. I really appreciate those windbreaks every time I camp up there. I would be happy to join a rebuilding work party, but in order for that to be effective, there will need to be a guard-duty detail for a few days afterwards as well.

LOL Good catch Brent! When I studied Mandarin it had a bad effect on my English now my English is horrible. I mean't our freinds will find who this guy is......

Most people agree with you Brent i'd say 99.99% of the Baldy regulars. If you like to hang on the summit for more than 30 seconds most of the days are really windy so those wind breaks offer a good place to hide from the wind and lean against while you talk to your buds!

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you stop destroying windbreaks now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will hurt you.

I have a hunch that teenager(s) are the culprit.

(1) Taking the ski lift eliminates a lot of elevation gain from Manker.

(2) Riding dirt bikes up the service road. Quick up, quick down.
