Richard I say in good humor you look at your post Almost and bring everything everyone told you to bring on that climb...So bring a stove so you can cook the hot cider on the summit for us!

This scares me. Apparently, I, a Berkeley liberal, am channeling you as I was about to write almost the same thing(I was going to suggest 10-15 stoves though, and canisters), when your post came up.

Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out how much frou frou outdoors clothing it is possible for one person to wear at a single time. Because, living within the shadow of REI Store No. 2, I have a lot of it. Indeed, when I cannot sleep at night, I count brands instead of sheep. North Face...Arcteryx...Mountain Hardware...Outdoor Research....Black Diamond...zzzzzzzz.

I really really do refuse to accept that Doug and Elizabeth recommended carrying a stove pot and cup on a day hike.

I was planning on bring crampons. So, sounds like not needed... Left my down jacket at home. As I wouldn't mind a new one, heading out to do my favorite thing (next to climbing mountains). Buy new gear! smile

Amazing values on Moosejaw today....20% off everything. (M.C., if you'd like me to pack an extra down jacket, women size S, let me know. Leaving in a couple of hours.)

I am bringing a thermos. Hot beverages without the fuss!

Hey Jeff or anybody. I know we need a wilderness pass (I think it's just for the car though) is anybody getting one today? My big 5 doesn't have them and I have no other way to get one before tomorrow. Would someone be willing to pick up another one for me? I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today smile

If you have the space, that would be great! Let me know... I will hold off doing my 2nd favorite thing till I hear back from you. Safe travels!

Even better ... if you like Nikon and are looking for a full-frame camera ... D600 with the standard kit lens for under $2K.

My parents wouldn't let me go to UC Berkeley... and I refused to become a Bruin ... yeah, there was tension in the house as I graduated High School ...

Thermos ... pure genius ... and Shin knows why I'm saying this ...

I have space. Would you prefer (1) a Patagonia down sweater, or (2) a puffier REI down jacket that is still quite slim fitting, but has a little more volume to it?

Love that you gave me a choice. smile The REI puffer sounds good. I may still pick up a down jacket as others may not be prepared for the cold. I do have my wool thermals, mid-layer shirt, mid-layer jacket & Goretex shell. See ya on the mountain!

Okay. The REI down jacket is packed. Puffy and slim fitting.

If Doug, with whom I am carpooling, should set off down the trail ahead of the group, I'll be in his wake, in which case I will stuff the down jacket in a white plastic bag with the Target Store logo all over it, and tie the bag to the driver side mirror of his truck. smile

Hi Everyone,
I just came down from Mt. Baldy area and this is the condition of the access road and general condition of the trail.

VONS at south east corner of Baseline/Mills opens from 5:00a.m. for snack, toilet, and STARBUCKS. Get off Baseline 210FWY and one block east. Drive back to PADUA and make left turn at PADUA to Mt. Baldy road and make right on to Mt. Baldy road to Manker.

Access Road: Mt. Baldy road
Entire road was free of ice or snow to Manker Flat.
Except: 1)The down hill section of the very last right turn before Manker flat had water and slushy snow in the dip. Drive straight. 2) Many small fallen rocks on one short section of hill side of road before Manker flat. Try to avoid them if you want to save tires.

Manker Flat: General area
There was a small amount of snow on the ground but not on the road. In front of out-house was slushy and iced up so please be careful and don't slip. My wife did. The fire road was free of snow but the hill side was covered with light snow.

Looking up the bowl from fire road:
The Bowl was covered by the some clouds but the entire mountain was covered with solid snow above 7000 feet to the summit.
It looks like a real winter face of Mt. Baldy. Above 7000-8000 feet was covered with clouds so the area has been remained very cold last few days and will be kept cold tonight and tomorrow. The snow will be very crisp up there and the temperature will stay low most of the day unless the Sun break up the clouds.
It will be very cold.

General suggestion of gears:
Everyone has different ideas about gears but this is my thoughts.
Mt. Baldy is a very small mountain for many people but it offers us all kind of weather conditions so let's prepare for them.
I'll take following items as a must item.
1) Good winter cloths: Jacket, windbreaker, good warm gloves, good base layers.
2) Good winter foot gears: Waterproof boots,Gators, good winter socks, microspikes or crampons, trekking poles with big basket or ice axe.(Whatever makes you feel safe.)
3) Even though we are not going to stay up the summit for long time but if you want to have hot drink when it is super cold, bring
stove and make hot drink or bring a small thermos with hot coffee to boost your moral. Bring a lighter with you just in case. Take whatever makes you comfortable.
4)Sun block,sun glasses,face mask.

SKI HUT IS OPEN for us from 7:00a.m..
Pavel,Mayor of Mt. Baldy,is kindly enough to open the Ski hut for us tomorrow. There will be hot water, warm wood burning stove and 24 beds. This maybe the best spot on the trail tomorrow.

Please join with us for a lunch at the Lodge in Mt. Baldy village after the hike from around 12:30.

It will be very cold so be prepared.
Drive safely and see you tomorrow for fun WPSMB family hike.

Sounds like a good incentive for me to get my winter gear out. I'll have my daughter with me (I have to carry her), so maybe I'll only make it to the ski hut; we'll see.

update on road conditions 630pm today :

Ken Murray and I just drove up there from lodge to Manker Flats and the trailhead at 400 pm and light dusting of snow and sleet.

we went up again at 600 but could not get but 2/3 of the way there. front wheel drive only, not 4 wheel, those guys were ok in the 2inches of slop on the road.

hard to say what it will like at 600 am tomorrow saturday, easier if colder -and crunchier ....hopefully
