We got a snowstorm just in time for Shindig 300 and Baldy did not disappoint. It was beautiful.

Congratulations on 300 Shin.

Eric and I were glad to have been a part of the Shindig and to stand on top of Baldy with Shin and his posse. Did anyone get a head count for the whole event? It looked like it was approaching 40. And Richard P. -- we missed you!

Congratulations Shin!
Nice photos Frank!

As you can imagine, I have a very low tolerance for things not going according to plan right now... So I headed home to do some shopping with my wife and visit with my Mom.

BTW: Here's some political commentary that I won't delete...
WTF: I'd be able to easily purchase enough guns and ammo to take out a good number of innocent people, but I can't buy a 12-pack between 0200 and 0600?????????????????????????? Our worth (note sarcasm) politicians actually wasted the time to pass a law...

Here is a bit more verbiage:

Eric and I joined a group of nearly 40 people for the first, and only Shiindig 300, the official celebration of Shin's 300th ascent of Mt. Baldy. After leaving not a trace of snow on Baldy one week earlier, the weather changed on Wednesday. The crowd at Manker Flat at the official 6:15 time was whoever could fit into the few 4WD vehicles that had made it up the snow-covered switchbacks -- plus our Honda Civic, of course. It took an extra hour of struggles up the road and relays to the Village to get the crew on the trail. But, it was a beautiful day, starting out at 23 degrees and finishing at around 40. There was plenty of snow all the way. Plenty of wind as well, except when Shin hit the summit and it all calmed down. The Ski Hut was the site of continuous revelry from around 8:30 on. All in all, a very busy day on the trail. And it was great to see so many folks from the Whitney Portal Store Message Board, hailing from far-flung places including Vancouver, WA, Berkeley, Bishop, Lone Pine, and Ridgecrest, not to mention Ventura, LA, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties.

There's more. I failed to cover Pavel, our genial Ski Hut host, the tequila, vodka, and beer, not to mention kielbassa soup.

What a FANTASTIC day!

Accumulated sleep deprivation and aching calves has me relaxing in an easy chair, sipping hot chocolate, and uploading photos. Some of my favorites are below, the rest are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27882691@N07/sets/72157632263878786/

Someone (Stacy? Norma?) who previously had hiked Baldy said that the day was "good epic." Oh yeah, between the conditions, views, and company, this was as much fun as I've had in a while. Doug, you got me there, and I owe you big!

Harvey, it was good to finally meet you! Thanks for being my hiking buddy all the way up to the summit and putting up with my camera problems.

Rosie, MC, Stacy, Curt, Tracie, Trailbud Doug, I loved the mini-reunion. Tracie, your cookies, chili, and pickles are, respectively, delicious, deliciouser, and deliciousest. (I don't even like pickles normally, but I took thirds.)

Shin, Jeff, Patrick, Kristine, Tony, Zach, Joyce, Randy, Frank, Ross, Norma, so nice to meet you! Hope to see you on the trail again soon. Or in, like, Spring.

Richard P., I am beginning to think you don't exist. Three WPSMB events, three Whitney summits, and an additional half dozen hikes in the area, and I've never seen you.

Some pics.

What's a little ice? This is about where Doug's truck made an unplanned daytime bivy.

Morning alpinglow on the summit ridge

Dawn brings color.

Pavel was the hostest with the mostest. Beer, that is.

Nice views on the way up!

Yeah, you guys go up the bowl. I'll stick to the trail. This time, anyway!

More beautifulness

The wonderful and knowledgeable Harvey Lankford.

Climbing to the ridge.

Above the clouds.

Congrats to Shin on his 300th!!!! What a fantastic day!!! I want to thank everyone I met yesterday for your hospitality and new friendship. It was a pleasure to meet all of you, and put a face to your names. You guys really made me feel welcome. Looking forward to many more hiking adventures with you all. This was my first time hiking in the snow and while more difficult, it was way more fun. Surprisingly not as sore as I thought I would be.

Alan,
You put it perfectly into words. Only thing I would add was the special joy of seeing those that were able to share it with their children. You and Eric, Arthur and Nicole, Ty and Derrick, Jim and Hikin Joyce. Hope I didn't leave anyone out. Akichow, your photos are beautiful! I'm so glad you have a summit photo from your camera. Mine of you are not half as good.

Again, congrats to Shin on a great personal accomplishment and the unexpected generosity of treating us all to dinner. Also, thank you Doug Sr. who through this board pretty much single-handedly put together the friendships represented on that beautiful mountain yesterday. It was indeed, "Good Epic!"

First and foremost: Congratulations to Shin on 300 ascents!!!

Wonderful to meet many of you yesterday for the first time "in the flesh." Equally wonderful to see many of you I don't get to see often.

Thanks to all of you for helping me with little Joyce. I've taken her on dozens of hikes, but this was my first time in the snow with her, and I was a bit underprepared. blush It's weird, but I'm more sore after hiking in the snow with Joyce than I was after doing the Skyline Trail to the Palm Springs Tram a week ago.

Dear Jeff,
Thank you very much for organizing this occasion for all WPSMB members and friends. Without you initiative, this fantastic hike didn't happen.
Everyone had a very special experience with Mt. Baldy which we love. We met old friends again and we made many new friends on this beautiful mountain.
The weather was perfect for all of us in all respects, snow, wind, fog, trail condition, frozen rode, steep slope, demanding bowl with snow, cold temperature, and many other.
Mt. Baldy challenged us and we took the challenge very well as WPSMB member.

The mountain god smiled on us.

Doug Sr., we have to thank you for this special occasion and the community you created for us.

Lastly,
I have to apologize many hikers that I didn't wait for everyone at the summit or I didn't have much time to talk with many new friends from out of town. There was one thing in mind that day was to get to the summit as soon as possible and done with it.
The number has been chasing me last few weeks.

Shin

My pictures are in Album link.

Hi Shin and the WPSMB Family,
First of all Shin, I want to congratulate you again on your great accomplishment of 300 summits on Baldy. Not only are you a dedicated and accomplished hiker, you are also a well-respected and admirable person. I'm sure you have taught many of us a thing or two about hiking.

To all the WPSMB Family I want to say I enjoyed seeing you again and also to finally meet some new friends who I only knew by name on this board. I can now put faces to the names of people. The weather was perfect for a great get together. Take care and see you all again.

It was great to meet everyone yesterday. That was the most fun I've ever had on Mt. Baldy. For my first snow hike, going up the "Bowl" was the most epic experience and I will never forget it. All the pictures look amazing. There isn't a bad shot among them. I don't know how to post individual pictures on this board, so here is the link to the album on Picasa: https://picasaweb.google.com/11589429779...feat=directlink

I also want to thank Jeff S/Yeti for setting up the group hike to celebrate Shin's 300 summit of Mt. Baldy.
I'd also like to thank Pavel for opening up the Seirra Ski Hut to everyone that was great to be able to take a break from the elements and enjoy the company of so many good friends.
Thanks to Norma and anyone else that did the car shuttle to bring everyone safely to the trailhead.
Yesterday marks one of the most fun days on the mountain that I've ever had, it was great reuniting with old freinds and making new ones.

P.S. Great pictures everyone way to capture that day, hope someone will post pictures of the dinner get together, sorry but I had previous engagement so I had to go frown
Thanks go out to all the people that came from so far away to make Shin's day that much more special and to all that made it, what a great day - thanks for allowing me to join in the fun. smile

Shin,
Congratulations again on 300 Baldy summits and for the very generous and tasty dinner! Special thanks to Jeff for organizing this great event, Pavel for being a terrific hut host, to Norma and the others that helped shuttle to the trailhead, Doug Sr. for putting all of us together in the most beautiful places on Earth, and to the great group of friends who enjoyed one of the most picture perfect days imaginable.
