OK (maybe...need permission), but are you sure you'll be able to climb on Friday after a hike on Baldy on Thursday?

EDIT: Vons @ 0530 Shin?

Shin, I'll be at Baldy tomorrow. We are taking the Register Ridge trail and starting at 6am. Maybe I'll get to say "Hi" to you in the parking lot before we begin, but that's probably the only time I'll see you. smile

Hi Hikergirl76,
We are flexible about the route. We may join with you if CatB say yes.
Other WPSMB members will be on the Register trail tomorrow from 4:00 a.m.

Richard, 5:30 a.m. at Vons is confirmed if you want to join. I'll carpool with CatB.

James, I can only hike once a week. See you on next event.

I will be headed up the Baldy Bowl Trail around 6am. Our babysitter's husband was asked to organize a hike for the Loma Linda University Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program. He asked me to tag along since I've done the hike a few times. I believe there will be 6 or so in our group.

Has anyone hiked the North Backbone trail, the one that goes up Baldy via Pine and Dawson, recently? It's been years since I went that way and I haven't seen anyone else come up to the summit from the north for a long time. I'm wondering if the trail has fallen into disuse. If it's still a viable trail would anyone like to do it with me the week after next?

Tina took a few folks up it 3 weeks ago. Still viable and it was cause for great mutterings.

And thank you Richard, Shin and CatB for a fun day. I am looking into getting a jetpack so I can keep up with you.

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

I saw Shin, Richard, Carole and Cat B in the Manker Flats parking lot before our group started out. I was actually with the Meetup group that was on the summit with you guys, but I stopped for breakfast about halfway up register ridge and took in the views, so I fell behind a bit. I made it to the summit around 10:30 and ran into 63Chevyll on his way down. He said I had just missed everyone. frown I'm so glad you all had a great time. It was truly a wonderful day to be on the mountain and I'm looking forward to the next WPSMB outing.

In mid-June,while conditioning for MW, I hiked from Baldy Village up the Bear Flats trail to the summit, then down the Backbone trail to the Notch, up and down the ^^^ (3-Ts) to Icehouse Saddle, and down IH Canyon to the parking lot. That's the Baldy Massif Traverse. Today I did the reverse traverse, from IH Canyon, over the ^^^ to the Notch, and up the Backbone trail to the summit of Baldy. But I cheated a little and came down the Ski Hut trail instead of Bear Flats. My excuse was that in late afternoon it would be easier to hitch a ride down from Manker Flats to the IHC parking area than up from the Village. (It was easy, I got a ride with the first people who came out of the Falls Road.) My total time, trailhead to trailhead, was 9'45". It was a great day for hiking, close to but not quite too warm for comfort.

That sounds like one brutal workout. How many miles is that?

It's 17 - 17.5 miles. Going the other way, starting in the Village and coming out at IHC, it's 19.5 (if you can trust the posted distances). Even though it's longer, I thought it was easier starting in the Village and going across to IHC. Going that way, the hardest part (the Bear Flats trail) is at the beginning when you're fresh and once you summit Baldy it's all cruising. Coming from IHC the hardest part is past the 1/2 point when you climb out of the Notch to the summit. By then you've already done the grind up the south side of Telegraph.

Burt,

I'm planning on doing this (starting at the Village) in a few weeks. Did you need to get water at the Notch? I've gone up Baldy from the Village/down Backbone, and also have done the 3 Ts from IHC/down the fire road, but have never put them together. I may not get to the Sierras this summer, so this hike is my goal this year.
It takes me 3.5 hrs. to summit from the Village and I usually have plenty of water left over when I'm done. I will be going slower when I do the Traverse, so thinking I may need to refill at the Notch (if it's open). Thanks! Brian

Brian,

I did stop at the Notch going both ways. The restroom at the Notch is open everyday (at least during the day), with potable water and flush toilets. Then there's the good water at Columbine Springs, 2-1/2 miles from the IHC trailhead.

Have a good hike. It ain't the Sierras but it ain't bad.

Burt
