How about Thor Halloween "costumes and candy hike"
Orionid Meteor Shower will be kicking from the 16th to the 30th. Who doesn't like meteors?

Well, the two of us made up a group climb in Nepal, so I guess four makes it more than official.
We need to run the date by Doug.
And hope no one complains that Thor is too tough for the group. SE Couloir is way less than three miles up; ~4k of gain.
Since the SE Couloir wouldn't be a good idea for a very large group (rockfall possibilities), we can adjust to many different routes, just like in '09... Smiley Face, Secret Route, Suckwinder (RG's new name for a very popular rock climb), Mirror Lake approach...

Sometime around Labor Day, Doug (and I) are taking a group of Friends (same people we took up to LBSL recently) up the MR...
We've got the Patagonia Presentation (probable maybe) on the 27th...
Carole, Karin, Rosie s/b consulted re: a different date for the Autumn Group Climb...
EDIT: Rumors are also floating around the Sierra that Doc Lankford may be on Whitney on 08.10... I'll probably try and sneak up the MR for that one too...
EDIT II: some time in August (I believe) Wild(flower) Betsy is going to be going up the East Face of Mt. Whitney... I probably sneak up to the summit for that event too!

Maybe the great and wonderous Oz should chime in with his preferred weekend, since we'll be like a pack of flying monkeys all over his castle...

Love it. And if Oz could send some courage my way, I'd really appreciate it, as one of these days I'd like to do the MR.

Well, there are 5 opportunities available from the above thread... And you can ask for your own date as I am not saying No to anybody since I made that Stupid Promise that I would Not climb Whitney unless invited by someone else... in '13 (I'm cheating that promise by heading up for Special Occasions...)
So far this year: - You up the Snow Slope to Trail Crest - Randy S up the Main Trail - This weekend... my Nephew Returns To The MR For The 1st Time In Fourteen Years!
I'll never get to 200 before Shin gets to 400 if I don't get more climbs in!
Maybe we should start heckling each other... that would get Doug's attention.

It was either that or "What's the weather going to be like on...?"
You got my follow-up note, right?

Richard, so want to take you up on that. Also, I reminded myself that I handled some class 3 stuff on Island Peak without any issues. Maybe I go up a day early, bivy at Iceberg Lake or something....meet you for the final push...would have to go light as I suspect I may be better off descending the MT. Got a portion of the JMT in August, HST around Labor Day, so timing is the question.
Jeff M., you are making my day. It's seriously grey weather here up north, and laughter is a good antidote.

The MR is only 4 miles... A day-climb is within easy grasp if you put your mind to it...
Any time...

The MR is bone dry and already paved with the heels of good intentions (i.e. plenty have worn the sand & scree to a nice tread, and the sprinkles from the last couple weeks have helped cement the deal). Grey weather can happen anywhere. Just be glad we're not in Kansas...

Jeff, Love that photo of the Sky Pilot. And the flying monkeys I haven't done Thor yet (turned back 2x due to weather) and really need to go up the MR again with RP so I can commit Wayne's Chimney to memory. Labor Day am doing the Cottonwood to Arc Pass via Miter, so hopefully can get in on one of the above with the siblings.

October 12-13 looks good on my calendar. Might be able to bring along my teenage sherpa who doesn't mind carrying lot of weight. Always a nice option for loose scree slopes.
We would be interested in exploring some of Thor Peak's class 4-5 approaches if others are interested. Or we could schedule an extra day for the climbers to hit the Whitney Buttress (or other suitable climbing area).
