My friend is currently hiking the JMT solo. I will be driving him home from the Portal on July 31. I hope to hike to Trail Camp on July 29, meet him at Guitar Lake on the 30th, hike Whitney the 31st, and return my weary traveler home. I entered the lotto and was unsuccessful. Each day I check the permits available and, so far, no luck. So, if anybody has an extra permit for the 29th, that will not be used, I would really appreciate it. I realize the permits are not transferable so if you cancel your trip I could get one that way at the Visitor Center. Thank you for any help!

July 29th is a Monday. If you go to the Visitor Center that morning (the 29th) you are very likely to get an overnight permit. This year, through the 27th of June, there has been at least one unused overnight permit every day.

I do recommend that you monitor the rec.gov web site. There are people that do cancel their reservations ahead of time, and those permits will become available at the time of cancellation. Getting one of these permits would be best, but if not, just show up the morning of the 29th. before 10:00 AM. Earlier is better, because many people use this method to secure their permits.
Good luck!

Hey Ocean:

You may be in luck -- check your Whitney Board "message" box.

It is my pleasure -- glad you were able to grab one of the two released permits. As of a couple of minutes ago, the other 7/29 overnight permit is still available!

If you see a guy with a UCLA cap hiking the Main Trail or fly-fishing Consultation, it might be BruinDave.

In the words of the guy with the +@ti2d, "Have fun!"
